Video coverage of the protest that took place in Galway on August 14, 2021. The protest consisted of two parts - speeches in Eyre Square and a picket on Shop Street, one of the busiest streets in Galway. The second part of the protest, although peaceful, aroused verbal aggression in many passers-by. Many ignored the presence of the protesters, but there were also many who stopped, listened, and took pictures of the information banners.

So-called "Trad" pundits like Sensus Fidelium and company enjoy reminding us that we've had terrible Popes before Francis. What they don't tell you, is that Catholic theology permits evil or immoral Popes, yes. But never in the 2000-year history of the Catholic Church has a Pope universally taught error. When presented with this single fact, they demonstrate a sudden inability to continue the discussion further, and resort to name-calling.
So what's the Catholic position? In the 3rd century, the absurd idea began to float around in clerical circles, that the personal immorality of a Bishop (and the Pope is the Bishop of the Diocese of Rome) deprives him of ecclesiastical office. Pope St. Callistus I condemned that error. So no, Catholics cannot believe that personal immorality deprive someone of ecclesiastical office.
Rather, Catholics believe that the Successor of Peter is infallible when teaching the Church on faith and morals. This has always been the teaching of the Church, and the Vatican Council of 1870 re-emphasized that. There are plenty of dogmatic texts that attest to this, but here's a very simple excerpt from a book called "Catholic Teaching for Children", ch. 15, pg. 117.
The next time someone tells you that Pope Francis is a heretic, show them this, and follow it up with: "The promises of Christ to Peter and His Church guarantee that we will never have a heretic as Pope."
