О ЧЕЛОВЕЧЕСКОМ ДОСТОИНСТВЕ

Пару месяцев назад меня пригласили прочитать лекцию на Международном Геологическом Конгрессе (Ю. Корея, август 2024). Два дня назад я получил от организаторов письмо с требованием убрать российскую аффилиацию. Я отказался это делать - нельзя позволять себя унижать. Нельзя превращать науку в инструмент дискриминации. Привожу письмо от организаторов конгресса и мой ответ. Прошу максимальных репостов.

Nevertheless, we earnestly ask you to change your Russian affiliation to the other country's affiliation by 7th April, 2024 (UTC+9),

if possible.

If not, we cannot accept the abstracts from Russia during review period next week according to IUGS's policy.

If your abstacts are not accepted because of the nationality, your fee may be refunded.

Dear colleagues,

I am appalled, shocked and disappointed by your discrimination against Russian scientists. Such discrimination is against the spirit of science and is not compatible with the international status of the International Geological Congress that you are organizing. 

While some people can be susceptible to xenophobia and hysteria induced by media and politicians, intellectuals should be above that. I hope that after a second thought you will agree that discrimination should have no place in science, in any international events, and more generally, in society - and will allow me and all other Russian scientists to use our Russian affiliations at IGC. Otherwise I will be unable to attend and will have to give this case maximum possible international publicity, in order to eradicate discrimination and racism from science. 

P.S. I have never visited Korea, but visited other Asian countries (especially China) many times, and got used to their welcoming attitude and hospitality. I expected a similar attitude in South Korea, but your letter showed that perhaps I was wrong.

Dear Professor Oganov,

Your mail has been forwarded to me in order to explain the iugs decision to refuse abstracts and talks submitted from Russian Institutions.

You will have seen the decision of the IUGS on our website. It essentially means that we have suspended any interaction with Russian Institutions. We even withdrew from a planned IGC meeting in St Petersburg in 2028.

This does not apply to Russian scientists working outside of Russia nor those with official affiliations that they can use as an affiliate from non-Russian institutions.

I sincerely regret the impact on Russian Scientists. But sanctions are supposed to influence people as well as politicians so they can feel motivated to exercise pressure. IUGS has taken a harder line than some scientific institutions, which is unanimously supported by our executive. I the IGS is the IUGS conference organised with a LOC after a rigorous selection process.

I too have strong links with Russian scientists being a foreign member of the RAS, that I have paused hoping for better times.

Dear Prof. Ludden,

Your letter clarifies the situation: initially, I thought that the idea to discriminate Russian scientists belongs to the organizers of the IGC in South Korea. Now I see that it was your idea, aimed at forcing Russian scientists to do what you want. I believe this is completely counterproductive.

(1) All human history shows that discrimination is a fundamental evil. Can anything good be achieved by evil means? Hardly so. Evil can produce only evil.

(2) Discrimination is humiliating. Your decision gives Russian scientists lower rights and freedoms than scientists from other countries, and this is a humiliation. Is it possible that, humiliating people, you will attract them to your cause? I expect the opposite.

(3) The IUGS is supposed to be an international scientific organization, not a political entity. Its international status is based on everyone's trust - but politicizing science, IUGS risks to lose the trust of the international scientific community. Trust and reputation are hard to earn, easy to lose, and impossible to regain after losing it.

(4) While your ban on Russian scientists is now becoming very much public and even scandalous, the pause that you have taken in your membership in Russian Academy of Sciences is something that no one seems to be aware of. Both your Russian Academy of Sciences page (https://new.ras.ru/staff/inostrannyy-chlen-ran/ludden-dzhon/) and your Wikipedia mention you as an active foreign member of Russian Academy of Sciences, with no hint of the pause.

The IUGS could play a very positive role. At the time of so many wars and divisions, the IUGS could build the bridges - but chose to burn them. It could help Ukrainian scientists - but instead chose to harm Russian ones. It could make South Korean organizers proud of their congress - but instead put them to shame.

А у Трампа — немножко другой. Республиканцы говорят: "Слушайте, Украина это проект. А в любом проекте мы люди практичные — сколько вкладываем, столько получаем. Вот в 2022 году этот проект выглядел неплохо. Мы в него вкладывали, чтобы ослабить Россию, вытащить все, что можно из Европейского союза, построить союзников в ряд. Ну, в общем, все сделали, что могли, да? Давайте мы потихонечку выходим из этого проекта, переключаемся на реального врага — это Китай, а остальное повесим на Байдена. И вот мы ждем, когда, наконец, это все оформится. Когда, наконец, мы сможем сказать: "Теперь мы эту карту понимаем и знаем, как с ней играть"
