It is amazing how much the public cares about Afghanistan after 20 years because the media finally decided to cover it. There was even condemnation for the first time, of a drone strike that killed children. Drone strikes have been killing children but it is as if the public is hearing about it for the first time. Media moves culture and culture moves politics. The press has made the outrage fashionable and more importantly safe. The Israelis shot three Palestinians dead this week two of them children, but there was no outrage because there is no coverage. Breaking the media monopoly is key. The lemming effect is more powerful than any message no matter how principled no matter how factual. If you want real change the most effective method is still monkey see monkey do. Gaining power in media is by far the most important element in any solution we hope to obtain.
