Personal statement by Gerhard Hallstatt (Allerseelen)

Austria is, as Switzerland, a small neutral country in Central Europe and always has to be cautious, critical, sceptical concerning all influences from the West and East, concerning all attempts to be taken over by one side, NATO, or the other, Russia. To be critical means to listen to all sides. I am an Austrian citizen and thus decided to be neutral too concerning conflicts and wars in other areas, even if they are really close - there is just one country, Hungary, between Austria and Ukraine. As most members of Allerseelen are Austrian citizens, Allerseelen is a neutral project too. Allerseelen have performed various times in Ukraine and in Russia, we have followers and friends in both countries.

Austria has its own experience after the second world war with ten years of Russian occupation - which was longer than the time of having being annected by the Third Reich. From narrations of my grandparents and historical reports I know what this meant to the Austrian people: psychoterror and terror.

On a very personal level, I have been working for a long time in an enterprise where I am the only Austrian in a wonderful team of employees and students that come from two countries: from Ukraine and Russia. In this enterprise we also frequently have visitors from several enemy states, for example Israel and Palestine, so it is a real necessity and essential virtue to maintain a neutral position with a certain distance. And this critical neutral position I also have in my private life and also as artist. I am working together with these Ukrainian and Russian colleagues and friends in a harmonious and peaceful way. All of us created together an island of peace without conflicts where diplomacy and respect and thoughtfulness are real virtues - something that maybe may sound unbelievable to some readers of these lines who are too often slaves of propaganda. Yet it is the truth. And this island of peace is a vision or even virus that should be spread - not the world of fanatism, propaganda, psychoterror, terror, violence and war that we are experiencing in a brutal way in Ukraine and Russia, in the Middle East and many other areas. The world is a barrel of gunpowder, and everyone who lives in it should be aware of this, doing his best to avoid its explosion.

The Rilke-Stein is a stone from the Sentiero Rilke, the Rilke Trail between Sistiana and Duino in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italia. This stone is an apparently insignificant, yet very active musician in Allerseelen playing electric violin in a very innovative and almost violent way on some at the time of writing unreleased songs. "Klangkapsel / Sound Capsule 040 is like a small boat on the Danube, somewhere between the Black Forest and the Black Sea. Black and melancholic is also its atmosphere. Its title is всяка вълна, Vsjaka Valna - the Bulgarian words for Every Wave. This composition was inspired by several travels to Bulgaria and the Black Sea and also by years of collaborations with the musician Dimo Dimov (Svarrogh, Miel Noir) who has his roots in this beautiful country. The song was published on the CD compilation Iznutri by Ewers Tonkunst in Russia in 2007. The minimal just consist of these words: "und jede Welle bringt mich näher" ("and every wave brings me closer"). It remains an enigma - to the listener as well as to the poet himself - if this movement means a being brought closer to a beginning or an end of something, to an hour of truth named love or death or desillusion or something entirely different. The Black Sea wave sounds in the song were recorded close to Калиакра, Kaliakra. Additional inspirations for this song apart from personal experiences and impressions were also the poem Gesang der Geister über den Wassern (Song of the Spirits over the Waters) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the composition The Perfect Fool by Gustav Holst. A very different song with a very similar title in German - Jede Welle (Every Wave) - appeared on the Allerseelen CD Rauhe Schale. This had been inspired by Croatia and the Adriatic Sea."
