In the Company of the Corrupt
‘And the chieftains from the people of Pharaoh said, “Do you leave Mūsā and his people, that they cause corruption in the earth, and that he abandons you and your gods?” He said, “We will soon slay their sons and let their women live. And, verily, we are dominant over them”’ (Qurʾān 7:127).
When they [the chieftains] saw the little notice the faithful paid to the threat of Pharaoh, and they saw the advancement of their [the faithful's] argument against Pharaoh, and his being dumbfounded, and that he did not issue a response, they aimed at arousing his mind and igniting his zealotry. So they came up with this speech stirring the anger of Pharaoh. And perhaps they saw him being affected by the miracle of Mūsā (as) and the admonition of those who brought faith from his own people and expected him to put off the realisation of his threat...
And the sentence, ‘And, verily, we are dominant over them,’ is an excuse from Pharaoh before the chieftains of his people for his delay in uprooting Mūsā (as) and his people.
(Ibn ʿĀshūr, al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr 9/57, 59: al-Dār al-Tūnisiyyah li al-Nashr)

Life After Death
‘Know that Allāh gives life to the earth after its death. We have surely expounded for you the signs that you might reason’ (Qurʾān 57:17).
Herein is an indication that Allāh (t) softens the hearts after their hardness, guides the perplexed after their misguidance and dispels all distresses after their intenseness. For as He gives life to the dead, arid, sterile earth with a heavy downpour of rain, likewise He guides hard hearts with the demonstrations of the Qurʾān and [His] proofs, and He inserts into them light after they had been locked, nothing of reach able to reach them.
(Ibn Kathīr, Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm 7/182: Dār ibn al-Jawzī)

A teacher at Al Kawthar Academy shares the following key takeaway from Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq's last lecture:
‘Let not our Ramaḍān be selfish. The idea is that we learn to think about others. Ramaḍān is about charity. Charity is not just about giving wealth, it's about volunteering our time, emotions and sharing in every way. Ramaḍān is about selflessness and eradicating selfishness. Let us try to instill humility and patience within us during this month.’

Great Equivalents
By the mercy of Allāh, we once again find ourselves in the virtuous month of Dhū al-Ḥijjah.
Abū Hurayrah (r) narrates that the Prophet of Allāh ﷺ said regarding worship during these ten days: "... fasting for each of these days is equivalent to the fasting of a year, and standing [keeping vigil in prayer] for each of these nights is equivalent to the standing of the Night of Qadr".
(Al-Tirmidhī, Jamiʿ 1/416: Maktabat al-Bushrā)
May Allāh accept our acts of worship and allow us to spend these ten days in the way that best pleases Him.

The Best of What I and the Prophets Before Me Have Said
Ibn ʿAmr (r) narrates that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “The best duʿāʾ is the duʿāʾ of the day of ʿArafah; the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ.
Lā ilāha illā-allāh, waḥdahū lā sharīka lahū, lahu-l-mulku, wa lahu-l-ḥamdu, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr.
There is no god but Allāh. He is Alone and He has no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise. He is over all things All-Powerful".
(Al-Tirmidhī, Jamiʿ 3/1333: Maktabat al-Bushrā)
ʿAllāmah Mubārakpurī (r) expounds on the reason: 'Because it is the most abundant in reward and the most prompt in response'.

The Origins of the Inviolable Months
﴿يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ قِتَالٍ فِيهِ قُلْ قِتَالٌ فِيهِ كَبِيرٌ﴾ (البقرة: ٢١٧)
‘They ask you about the inviolable month — fighting therein. Say: ‘Fighting therein is grave’ (Qurʾān 2:217).
The āyah is proof of the prohibition of fighting in the inviolable months and affirmation of what inviolability those months have which Allāh has appointed for them since some ancient time. Perhaps this was from the era of Ibrāhīm (as), as the inviolability of the timeframe requires the abandoning of all vice during the period thereof.
And these months are the very occasion of ḥajj, its preliminaries and its conclusions, and of ʿumrah likewise. For if fighting was not prohibited during them, ḥajj and ʿumrah would indeed have been abandoned. And for that reason, Islām affirmed them during the days in which there were polytheists in the lands of the Arabs, for the benefit of the Muslims and for the benefit of ḥajj.
(Ibn ʿĀshūr, al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr 2/326: al-Dār al-Tūnisiyyah li al-Nashr)

9th Dhū al-Ḥijjah and 10th Muḥarram
We learn from the Prophet ﷺ that whereas the fast of ʿArafah on 9th Dhū al-Ḥijjah expiates the misdeeds of the past year and the forthcoming year, the fast of ʿĀshūrāʾ on 10th Muḥarram expiates the misdeeds of only the previous year. Why might this be the case?
In the midst of a commentary on a famous work of Ḥanafī jurisprudence, the thirteenth-century AH scholar, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭaḥṭāwī (r), suggests the following short but intriguing explanation:
‘As for the fast of the Day of ʿArafah, it expiates the sins of the past and upcoming years because it is a Muḥammadan ordinance, as opposed to the former [the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ], for, verily, it is a Mosaic ordinance.’
(Al-Ṭaḥṭāwī, Ḥāshiyat al-Ṭaḥṭāwī ʿalā al-Marāqī al-Falāḥ Sharḥ Nūr al-Īḍāḥ 639: Dār al-Kutub al-ʿIlmiyyah)
