Got a surprise visit by our former summer admission students today. Can't believe it's already been a year. We did some catching up, talked about good old days, shared personal visions for the future and finally, posed for this little photo.
Just wanted to thank these guys for brightening up our boring weekend. It was real bliss to have you.

The diagram provides information about the production process of sugar from sugar canes.
The initial stages of sugar production happen on the field. First of all, sugar canes are planted, and after about 12-18 months they ripen. At the following stage, the grown sugar canes are harvested, and this can be done in 2 ways: mechanically and manually. In the former, two pieces of machinery - a combine harvester and a tractor with a trailer - are employed simultaneously to harvest the yield, whereas in the latter, plantation laborers harvest sugar canes with the help of sickles.
The remaining phases of the process involve treating sugar canes and obtaining sugar. Having been harvested, sugar canes go through a device called crusher with a couple of wheels on the sides and an opening on the top. This device converts sugar canes into juice, which is collected in a round container next to the machine. The juice is then purified with a funnel-like limestone filter, before being put into an evaporator. In there, the liquid is heated and condensed to obtain syrup. Subsequently, the substance is transferred to a centrifuge that rotates in a counter-clockwise direction and makes sugar crystals, which are then dried and cooled in a barrel in the ultimate stage.
Overall, this process takes place in two locations, commencing with growing sugar canes and culminating with drying and cooling the end-product: sugar. It is also apparent that there are a total of seven stages involved in this linear process that require the use of specialized pieces of machinery and some external influence.

The line graph compares how unemployment rate among young people aged 15-24 changed over a 12-year period (2000-2012) in five European countries.
Overall, the rate of unemployment grew noticeably in all European countries with the exception of Germany. Of a particular note are Italy and Germany, where unemployment rates were highest and lowest respectively for the better part of the period.
In detail, youth unemployment underwent a drastic rise in Britain and Sweden. In 2000, the rate of unemployment stood at 10% in Britain, which had doubled by 2008. This figure grew to about 27% in 2009, but it had fallen to a quarter three years later. Similarly, Sweden also saw its youth unemployment rate climb. While initially the rate stood at just over a tenth, it had gone up twofold by the end of the period.
The figures for the other countries also changed, albeit to a varying degree. The proportion of unemployed youth was just under 30% in Italy in 2000, which dropped to a fifth in 2008. This was followed by an exponential rise, hitting an all-time high of nearly 36% in 2012. The unemployment rate among young people also went up in France, going from 20% in 2000 to 25% in 2012. Finally, despite some fluctuations, the rate of youth unemployment remained unchanged in Germany, at about 10%.

Modern cultures around the world have become similar when compared to the past.
Is it a positive or negative development?
Today, cultural differences are disappearing rapidly in comparison with the past. While this trend has some negative implications, I share the view that it is on the whole a change for the better.
Admittedly, growing cultural homogeneity β the process of cultures becoming similar β has some drawbacks to consider. The most concerning aspect of this process is arguably loss of cultural diversity. This happens when dominant cultures of the West replace those of minority groups, rendering unique beliefs, traditions, and customs obsolete. Having lost cultural nuances, people are likely to lose their identity. One other issue stemming from increased similarity among cultures is diminished creativity. When people generally follow the similar trends and principals such as artforms and business practices, they are likely to lose their sense of ingenuity and novelty. This, in turn, creates a uniform world lacking sophistication and richness.
Despite the possible negative aspects of cultural assimilation across the world, I tend to see it in a positive light. One positive outcome of this trend can be a greater sense of mutual understanding. As people become accepting of other cultures, they grow increasingly like-minded. Take technology as an example. While in the past members of conservative eastern cultures were rather skeptical of technology, they now enjoy using it as much as their western counterparts. This, in effect, has dispelled cultural misunderstandings around the use of technology. An equally important point is increased productivity in the workplace. People working for multinational companies now cooperate better irrespective of their cultural background seeing as they share the same beliefs and priorities. The outcome of this is maximized company output.
In conclusion, as much as I understand cultural assimilation can prove disadvantageous, I lean more towards the view that it fosters a heightened sense of interpersonal understanding and greater workplace efficiency.

The maps show the layout of a central library two decades ago and that of today.
20 years ago, the majority of the sections of the library were devoted to reading. Upon entrance, a couple of round tables with chairs around them appeared in the center, while the right-hand side of the entrance was devoted to an enquiry desk and its opposite side to reading newspapers and magazines. On either side of the tables, there were fiction and non-fiction books for adults, a.nd the top right and left corners were used for children's books and multimedia purposes (CDs, videos and computer games), respectively.
By today, this building has been completely altered. The enquiry desk has been replaced by a room for a brand-new cafΓ©, and the room to the left of the entrance has been converted into a computer room. It is also worth noting that the tables in the middle have been removed, making the foyer more spacious. Additionally, the room for children's books has been made into a lecture room, and the space between it and the new cafΓ© now houses an information desk flanked by three self-service machines and adult fiction books. Of a particular note is the expansion of the former multimedia room to host storytelling events and feature children's books, with all reference books being placed just below this room.
Overall, the public library has experienced a complete makeover with the expansion of some rooms. It is also clear that all the rooms have now been repurposed to include new amenities and space for events, with an increased focus on technology.

Some people believe that there will be a reduction in air travel in the future.
Do you think that this trend is a positive or negative development?
Some predict that travelling by air will eventually fall out of favor. Although this development would certainly bring about some positive changes, I share the view that it is generally a change for the worse.
Admittedly, diminished use of air travel can prove advantageous in some respects. The primary benefit would be to the environment. Once air travel frequency falls, less fossil fuel is burned. This is followed by a fall in carbon footprint of airplane companies, which would be a step in the right direction towards solving environmental problems such as global warming and air pollution. One other advantage is a significant drop in air traffic accidents. It is common knowledge that many lives are lost as a result of on-air collisions, rogue airplanes, and military airplane takedowns. Only having discouraged air travel can we hope for a decline in casualties from air travel accidents.
Despite the guaranteed benefits, I prefer to see a potential fall in air travel in a rather negative light. From an economic standpoint, a downturn in the airplane and tourism industries follows reduced use of air travel. That is, airplane manufacturers and companies, along with international tourism agencies, declare major staff layoffs and bankruptcies since their services will no longer be needed as much. More than having an economic impact, less frequent air travel can mean inconvenience and a high cost of travelling for the traveler. Not having the air travel option, many travelers will have to resort to other modes of travelling, such as by train or car, which are not only inconvenient for long trips, but also substantially pricy.
In conclusion, as much as I agree there are some upsides to less frequent air travel, I am more of the view that it is an undesirable change seeing as there are economic and convenience costs involved.

The pie charts show how UK citizens spent their income in the years 1971 and 2001.
Overall, in 1971, most income was expended on food while the reverse was true for computers. Thirty years later, however, expenditure on cars accounted for the highest figure whereas books made up the smallest one. Furthermore, spending on cars, computers, and restaurants grew; however, the figures for the remaining expenditure categories dropped.
In 1971, food was the most spent on item with 44%, which was twice as much as the second biggest spending category β cars. Expenditure on petrol and furniture constituted about a tenth each, closely followed by restaurants and books (7% and 6%). In stark contrast, people in the UK spent by far the least on computers, at 2%.
The spending habits of UK citizens changed remarkably three decades later. Spending on cars virtually doubled, reaching just over two-fifths. This was offset by a decline in food expenditure, which decreased nearly threefold from the initial year to 14%. The figure for computers grew, so did that for eating out. The former rose to 12% while the latter 14%. Furniture and petrol both received less money, at 8% each, and similarly, book purchase dropped to 1%.

The diagram provides information about the production process of instant noodles.
The initial stage of the process involves preparing raw materials. First of all, flour is delivered to storage silos by a flour tanker to fill them. This flour and two other raw materials are required for to make dough for instant noodles, which are water and oil.
Once prepared, these products initiate the production process. They are put into a mixer and stirred to make dough in the second stage. This dough subsequently passes through rollers located beneath the mixer, which thin it and make dough sheets. Following this, the sheets are cut into strips that are shaped into noodle discs. The discs are then submerged into a pot with oil to be fried, thereafter which they are dried.
Having been dried, the ready-to-consume noodle discs are placed into cups together with spices and vegetables - two other constituents of this instant food. Ultimately, these packages are labelled and sealed, producing the final product for sale and consumption.
Overall, this linear process commences with preparing raw materials and culminates with packaging the end-products. It is also readily apparent that there are eight distinct stages involved in instant noodle production, requiring the use of a fully-automated conveyor belt and some external influence.

I decided to go after another 9.0 because it seemed like the only logical way to finish off this IELTS band 9.0 saga. More than that, I took it as a personal challenge to see if I could muster courage to put my public rep on the line and make a bold move. I did it so that I could detach my identity from 9.0 regardless of the outcome and get on with my life. Not gonna lie, it was one of the most mentally challenging things I'd ever done. But I'm glad I did it because I now feel so much more confident and comfortable being vulnerable.
Exam experience this time was more or less the same as it was the other times, except this time I was little stressed out. I'm gonna be making a separate post detailing my personal impressions and where things went wrong.

I normally sign up for the exam about a month in advance. That gives me plenty of time to psyche myself up and get in the right headspace. Within this window, my job is to reset my mind and trick it into thinking that I'm sitting the exam for the first time. You might be wondering what's the point. Unlike what you might be thinking, this is not my copying mechanism for stress, but rather a way to get me pumped up about the exam so I get my lazy ass to work (excuse my French).
As for the prep itself, I don't really do anything outside of teaching a class to get ready for my exam. I think teaching an excellent class is per se the best way of going about my prep. But I admit I went out of my way and brushed up on my writing by watching some tutorials online hoping I'd carve out some edge. This process was quite refreshing and enlightening, tbh, as I picked up some useful tips watching tutorials.
Exam date:
A weird sensation of unease creeped up on me right before the exam, but I brushed it off instantly with some deep breathwork and meditation (always work like a charm). When the test finally got kickstarted, the mind turned on autopilot like always. I got off to a really good start with me acing all section 1 questions. But when section 2 rolled in, things got little hairy. I got confirmation for two of the options in one of the questions, which made things confusing a bit. Guess I missed some details and picked the wrong answer there. But the rest was pretty fine. Anyway, it sucks getting 8.5 in listening after pulling off 9.0 in this section 8 times straight.
Writing - most disappointed outcome. But it is what it is. Did the best I could, but I guess it wasn't my day that day.
Speaking - sitting a speaking interview straight after the mind-numbing process of the main test was not ideal. But no excuses. I went ahead and went for it (it was a cocky move in retrospect). I didn't like the fact that I was incoherent at times and my points lacked a conclusion. Taking full responsibility for that.
After all, I knew right then and there I had a slim chance of repeating my past success with my less than perfect attempt. But I'm glad I did it. I wanna finish off this post with a quote from one of my favorite body builders, Tom Platz.
"The only place to go from failure is to win"

Feel honored and blessed to receive this award. My sincerest thanks to our president, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, for honoring me with the title βMard Oβgβlonβ
More than just marking a new milestone in my life, this award has refilled me with enthusiasm and energy to carry on the work weβve been doing at Ad Astra to help many young individuals set ambitious goals and pursue them relentlessly.
I wanna thank you guys as well for pulling for us all these years. Iβm in your debt. ππ

Also gave a short interview in English. Not sure how it came out though. It was a pretty memorable day todayβ¦
