The bar chart provides information on five different areas of expenditure in the UK and France in 2010.

Relatively more money was spent by the UK on cars, books and cameras than France. On the former category, the UK spent just over 450,000 pounds, whereas France used about 55,000 pounds less. For books, the expenditure gap widened, but both countries expended less than they did on cars: approximately 400,000 and 300,000 pounds for the UK and France, respectively. The margin in spending was the largest for cameras, with the figure for France being more than two times smaller (150,000 pounds) than that for the UK (slightly over 350,000 pounds).

However, France's expense on computers and perfume was higher than the UK's. About 380,000 pounds was spent by France on computers as opposed to 350,000 pounds by the UK, but the amounts for perfume were a lot lower with the respective figures of 200,000 and just under 150,000 pounds.

Overall, the UK spent more money on cars, books and cameras, whereas France did so on the other two categories: computers and perfume. It is also apparent that both these nations used the most money on automobiles, and the biggest difference in expenditure was recorded in cameras.

Because of modern technology, some people believe that it is no longer necessary for people to learn handwriting skills, but others believe that handwriting is still an important skill.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People fall into two camps as to whether handwriting is an essential skill in today’s technological world. While there are reasons to believe that handwriting is somewhat obsolete, I share the view that it is here to stay.

Admittedly, modern technology has undermined the value of handwriting in several ways. Firstly, many people today see electronic gadgets such as smartphones and tablets, and by extension, typing as a convenient substitute/alternative to handwriting. Unlike writing by hand, typing allows the user to edit, share, save, and discard instantly. As a result, increasingly more people prefer typing, which renders handwriting obsolete. Furthermore, there has been a uniform switch to electronics across many sectors of the economy. More and more companies conduct their operations with the help of computers and smartphones, and thus require that their employees possess typing skills. In effect, many consider that handwriting is not a prerequisite for employment anymore.

Despite these changes, I firmly believe that handwriting has some irreplaceable applications in today’s world. The main benefit of handwriting can be seen in education. Most schools including universities around the world still depend on paper-based exams where handwriting is essential. This is often done to prevent instances of cheating among students as computer-based assignments are prone to academic dishonesty such as plagiarism. In this sense, handwriting is critical to maintain the quality and integrity of the education system. Another key feature of writing by hand is its flexibility. That is, typing limits the user’s writing experience to a set number of characters, but with handwriting the range of possible symbols is limited to one’s imagination. Computers are yet to replace this particular quality of handwriting.

In conclusion, although general preference to typing due to its convenience makes handwriting less relevant than it used to be, I think this skill is still an integral part of our lives for its reliability and flexibility.

Nowadays employment options are changing and employees cannot rely on having the same job and working conditions throughout their life.

What are some possible causes?

Suggest some ways to plan for the future under these circumstances.

It is true that today’s job market has become relatively unstable and that lifetime employment is not an optimal choice for many people anymore. In this essay, I will attempt to shed light on some of the causes of this situation and also propose some counter measures for future employees.

To my mind, the rapidly changing nature of the job market can be attributed to two factors. The most plausible one is advances in technology. As well as helping improve productivity in the workplace, technological improvements radically changed employment patterns. That is, an increasing number of manual jobs are being replaced by machines, which reduced vacancies in the industrial and agricultural sectors. Knowledge-based industries such as information technologies, banking, and law also saw swift changes in terms of employment options. For instance, with the advent of advanced AI systems such as chatGPT, companies declared huge staff layoffs as tasks such as code writing, accounting, and legal work can be done by AI programs at a negligible cost. Another crucial factor is global economic turmoil caused by international conflicts and global pandemics. Growing tension between Russia and the West has resulted in major setbacks in many industries while the global spread of COVID-19 drove/rendered many people jobless.

Despite the alarming shifts in the job market, there are several ways employees can ensure stability for the future. One of the most practical solutions here would be creating multiple streams of income. This requires employees to abandon the traditional concept of lifetime employment and consider simultaneous employment in different spheres as a way to diversify their sources of income. This way, employees can create a safety net for possible future economic downturns. Along with accepting multiple jobs, employees should develop financial literacy. Understanding how to manage one’s finances such as by creating a savings account and investing in the financial market could prove useful as financial security is critical for one’s future success.

In conclusion, improvements in technology and rising global instability are two key drivers behind the changing economics of the job market. To counter these, employees should consider building several income streams and financial skills.

The line chart illustrates how many visitors three different museums - British Museum, Science Museum and Natural History Museum - had between June and September months of 2013.

The number of people visiting British Museum was always the highest. After an initial rise from 600,000 to approximately 750,000 from June to July, the figure for those who visited this museum dropped to 500,000 in the next month. In September, however, it picked up again to reach around 650,000.

By contrast, the quantities of the other two museums were comparatively lower. About 550,000 museum-goers paid a visit to Natural History Museum in June, but this figure declined to just under 400,000 in July and stood stable at this point until August. Meanwhile, Science Museum also saw a steady decrease of 100,000 to reach 300,000 over the first three months, but both museums witnessed a growth in September, finishing at roughly the same point of nearly 450,000.

Overall, British Museum and Science Museum experienced an increase in the number of visitors, whereas the reverse was true for Natural History Museum. It is also evident that the rankings of these museums didn't change over the timeframe, with British Museum dominating throughout and Science Museum having the lowest figures.

New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time.

Do you think the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

Leisure time habits of children have been affected by modern technologies in different ways. While this trend is advantageous to some extent/degree, I share the view that the negative impact of technology on children’s downtime is more considerable.

Admittedly, new technologies children use in their free time benefit both them and their parents. The main advantage for children is improved cognition. That is, early exposure to computers and smartphones stimulates neurological growth in children as they are compelled to process many forms of visual and audio information while interacting with these devices. Having bolstered their cognitive abilities from a young age, children are likely to perform well at school, which is essential for their future success. Parents are also at an advantage from allowing their children access to electronic devices such as hand-held consoles and tablets. This is because these gadgets are a virtually free source of entertainment as opposed to taking children to amusement parks and attractions.

In spite of being somewhat beneficial, I believe new technologies do children more harm than good. Firstly, technology can be a source of distraction for children. It can distract them from their studies and other important commitments such as sports. Once distracted, children often see their performance at school decline and eventually, fall behind their peers. More than just causing poor academic performance, technology damages a child’s social life. When children are occupied with technology, they are deprived of chances for social engagement in the real-world context, and if they do not learn to develop social bonds, they fail to do so in adult life. However, perhaps the most worrying aspect of modern technology for children is its health implications. Children who use electronic devices are likely to develop a sedentary lifestyle and harmful addictions like compulsive TV-watching and playing video games. In no way can the use of technology among children be justified if their health is at risk.

In conclusion, the use of technology for leisure among children can be a change for the better in some aspects, but I consider that its downsides ranging from poor school performance, lack of social interaction to health detriments are more concerning.
