Nowadays more tasks at home and work are being performed by robots.

Is it a positive or negative development?

Over the past few decades, great strides have been made in technology, particularly in the field of robotics. Although robot machines still have room to grow, they have been helping humans perform everyday tasks both at home and in the workplace for quite a while now. In my opinion, this development is a change for the better.

Robots assist humans immensely with various household chores, and it is a great convenience to have them. Robot vacuum cleaners like Electrolux Trilobite, for example, can be set up to clean carpets and mop the floors at certain times of the day, accomplishing all of its tasks autonomously and making almost no noise while doing so. Most humans, by contrast, tend to have a hectic schedule and may not make enough time for these regular routines, so having a cleaner like this is a weight lifted off their shoulders. Electronic robot appliances also assist people with cooking. There are dozens of models of multicookers on offer nowadays, which can cook for an entire family if ingredients are ready. While not being completely autonomous, this kitchen equipment is a step forward, and it could cut down the time people spend preparing meals.

The benefits of deploying robots do not end there; they are being widely utilized in the workplace. The most significant application of robots is probably in medicine. Robots do not have feelings, nor do they get tired, which makes them more accurate and therefore ideal for carrying out surgeries. These two factors are crucial for surgeries, because, as is the case with humans, fatigue brings about errors, and mistakes in this domain can cost lives. Another area that has benefitted from robot assistance is manufacturing. There is no longer a need for humans to carry out boring and repetitive tasks such as food packaging and soldering, since robots are there to replace them. Aside from this, robots are now being used to lift and carry heavy objects from one place to another, thereby enhancing efficiency in the workplace.

In conclusion, the contribution of robots has been enormous both at home and in the workplace. They help humans with regular tasks of cleaning and cooking at home, as well as assisting them with many responsibilities at work. Therefore, I believe that this change is a desirable one.

Some people believe that the climate of a country has the greatest influence on its culture (e.g. food, arts, music, clothing). Others believe that there are more important influences.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The climate of a country is thought to have the most effect on its culture, such as food, arts, and many more. Some people, however, do not share this view and state that more significant factors should be considered while interpreting a nation’s culture. I tend to agree with the latter school of thought.

At the outset, it is essential to explore different ways a culture is affected by climate. Evidently, the range and quality of food – one of the most defining aspects of any culture – is primarily determined by local climate. Take tropical and northern climates as examples. The former is ideal for growing citrus fruits and vegetable while the latter hardly allows farmer to grow plants, making them dependent on animal products such as livestock for subsistence. The same principle applies to cultural activity preferences of a particular country. People in the north generally give their preference to indoor pastimes like theater performances as opposed to outdoor festivals and carnivals in the warmer regions of the globe. Clearly, climate is a crucial factor in shaping culture.

On the other hand, I would contend that culture of a country develops in much more nuanced ways. Religion has arguably the most profound impact on any culture. This is because many cultural traditions and customs are rooted in religious principles and beliefs that have dictated people’s way of life for centuries. True, not all modern cultures have directly been affected by religion, but their origins can be traced back to the framework of ancient belief systems that were for the most part religion-driven. One other equally strong determinant of culture is technology. Despite being a relatively new phenomenon, technology has radically restructured our lifestyles, traditions, and values, which invariably constitute our culture.

In conclusion, though I admit climate has some bearing in the evolution of culture, factors such as religion and technology appear to have more substantial impact on it.

The bar chart provides information about seven different employment categories of adults in 2003 and 10 years later.

Overall, the proportions of adults in education training, hotel industry, building, and self-employed categories increased, whereas the figures for those in medicine, business, and who were unemployed showed the opposite. Although in 2003 business sector had the largest proportion of workers, in 2013 the dominance was taken over by the self-employed category.

Focusing on the year 2003 first, the highest number of workers, at about 47%, was employed in the business field, which was distantly followed by medicine with 20%. An identical percentage of adults (just over 10%) were self-employed and unemployed in this year, while education training and hotel industry closed the list with about 8 and 4% respectively.

The rankings of all the categories had changed by 2013. For example, those who were self-employed accounted for the largest share of about a third, whereas business ranked second with roughly 27%. Having proportions in the region of 17-20%, building, hotel industry and education training came next, but medicine and unemployment figures were a lot lower than the shares mentioned above, at 10% and just over 5%.

All the people in a company should be treated equally and provided with the same number of holidays in a year.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It
is suggested that every member of company staff be entitled to the same amount of holiday time as a gesture of equal treatment in the workplace. I personally take issue with this suggestion.

Admittedly, a company can benefit from a uniform holiday time policy in some respects. One immediate positive outcome of such a policy would be improved staff morale. Having received an equal amount of holiday break, staff members, especially junior employees, feel appreciated and a heightened sense of self-worth, which are critical to employee engagement. One other upside to having the same number of sabbaticals is better group dynamics. That is, it helps foster positive relationships between the employee and the supervisor seeing as everyone’s work is equally rewarded. This is especially true in the case of new recruits who might feel underappreciated for lack of experience and familiarity with their job. In these regards, company can enjoy boosted productivity as a result of the so-called β€œjust holiday system”.

Despite these benefits, I see some flaws in allowing all employees equal holiday break irrespective of their job title or productivity. The main downside is arguably loss of competitive spirit in the workplace. Since most people consider their holiday length as a privilege earned for their exceptional performance, they become less driven to work hard when their holiday time is capped. This, as a result, might mean fewer high performers in a company. Not only does uniform holiday break hurt employee performance, but it can also prove financially disadvantageous. This is because a general rise in vacation time is often followed by a fall in output, which means no additional revenue for the company. In effect, the company is less likely to grow.

In conclusion, there are certainly some advantages to having the same amount of time off work for the entire staff, but I believe it can hinder competition in a company and its bottom line.

Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the governments rather than private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is suggested that the government be in charge of conducting scientific research, not private entities such as businesses. Although there are some valid reasons for this suggestion, I am personally opposed to it.

Government oversight over research in the area of science can be justified on several grounds. The most potent reason for this would be prevention of unethical practices. Some companies, like cosmetics and drug manufacturers, test their new products on animals and in some extreme cases, on humans, in the name of scientific advances. This raises moral questions over animal and human safety. The government could also play a critical role in sharing scientific research results in a just and meaningful manner. Companies are sometimes reluctant to share their research results, but the government could disseminate knowledge obtained from scientific research efficiently with extensive resources at its disposal and to people who need it the most.

Despite these reasons, I object to having the government control scientific research. The main problem here is research progress being stifled as a result of excessive regulation. That is, inherent bureaucracy which comes with government intervention could hamper research speed as well as business operations. Allowing businesses autonomy in scientific research would also fuel healthy competition. Having been given freedom to research and experiment and deliver new products, companies would be more driven to innovate, which will ultimately benefit the economy. Finally, government involvement can sometimes lead to malicious meddling when there are corrupt officials involved. In these regards, government being responsible for scientific research can be undesirable.

In conclusion, government control over scientific research is justifiable in some ways, but I believe it is an unwise course of action as it can hinder progress and market competition and possibly, create chances for unlawful acts.
