Long post about algorithmic trading.
Since 2020 we have tested, developed and optimized over 1000 trading robots. That was a steep learning curve. Running 16 VPS servers and constantly monitoring over 50 accounts. Changing just one number in the settings and analysing the tiny differences in the strategy. Here are some of the most important things we learned.

Changing just one number in the settings and analysing the tiny differences in the strategy. Here are some of the most important things we learned.

1. Backtests in MT4 and MT5 don’t mean anything. Literally.
Are they completely useless? Nope - optimizing is a handy feature to filter out bad settings. But, it’s very easy to make a beautiful curve on backtest.
I can code a history reader that’s over optimized - will be a curve showing 100$ turning into 5mil. That will take 15 minutes.
Takeaway - backtests are good to filter out settings that are definitely bad - but the only way to actually test a robot is forward testing.
DEMO for at least a month will save you a lot of blown cash.
You will not trade 10 years ago, you will trade tmrw - and the day after etc. Always keep that in mind.

2. MQL market is full of trash. I bought most of the best EAs there - 95% are not worth it.
Reviews are paid for, refunds are impossible, and the live signals account tracking is too easy to manipulate. Sellers simply delete accounts and disappear after strategy fails.
Almost none of the sellers have a Myfxbook track record over 3 months. Always ask for Myfxbook and investor password.
Note: Myfxbook is the best third party track record publisher available for forex.
But, even Myfxbook numbers can be manipulated - if the broker is shady offshore b-book, numbers can be customised.
Little trick -if you have a Myfxbook where you are making a track record of the strategy, drawdown numbers can be lowered after large dd. Example if the drawdown is 30%, remove the account from Myfxbook (delete). Then connect it again. Result - it counts equity based percentage dd of history - so the account dd will show 15% instead of 30%.

3. High frequency trading - is not possible for retail (small capital traders).
Any HFT EA will only work on DEMO, on a live account the trading conditions (even on ECN broker) will loose money every time.
Why? How do brokers provide 0pips spread? By taking the other side of your trades (b-book). When you use HFT they will stop doing that (otherwise they loose money on the spread) - and send your orders straight to market. The trading conditions are simply not compatible with HFT.
Obviously prop firms do not allow these robots because you are trading on demo and essentially arbitraging the demo prices.
Takeaway: avoiding HFT robots will save your time.
