1973 - SUMMER OF RACIST TERROR

On August 25, 1973, an event occurred that would spark a wave of violence against Algerians in France. An Algerian criminal, Salah Bougrine, killed a French bus driver, Emile Gerlache, and injured 5 other French people, in a knife attack. The system judge declared the Algerian criminal innocent due to “mental illness.”

After this event, former OAS (public link) members secretly met to plan direct actions against Algerians. Although total amounts remain unclear, the highest estimates state that over 50 Algerians were killed and over 300 were injured throughout the rest of 1973. Most of these racist murders went unsolved because French Algerians who fled French Algeria infiltrated the police forces and judiciary, allowing murders of Algerians to go unsolved.
