NATO was formed with the purpose of fighting Russia. In 1990 after the Berlin Wall fell, NATO agreed to not add anymore countries to the East. We broke that promise and started adding countries closer and closer to Russia, naturally becoming more and more of a threat. The US has meddled in the affairs of Ukraine for years, even going so far as to plant a government there that we basically control (the current one).

Despite what everyone seems to think, half of Ukraine actually WANTS to be a part of Russia. They have been fighting the other half that doesn’t for a decade and Putin has been trying to keep the peace. In 2014, there was a treaty called the Minsk treaty that was supposed to be a ceasefire. But the Ukraine government has been bombing the separatists anyway that whole time, egged on by the US. Putin right now is invading the area that WANTS to be a part of Russia, they even speak Russian, but the Ukrainian government doesn’t want to give it up. Thus far, it has been the US and Ukraine that has refused to negotiate with Putin.

Then you add the fact that we have been trying to get Ukraine into NATO. That means that we would have NATO troops right on the border of Russia. It’s almost like we have been trying to provoke Putin and now we’re mad that he is fighting back.
