Peer-to-Peer Crypto Exchange Champions Africa in Online Sessions

A peer-to-peer crypto exchange is hosting six free online sessions to educate African consumers and businesses about Bitcoin.

The coronavirus pandemic has been hugely disruptive to crypto conferences and events around the world, but one company is determined to continue educating businesses and consumers about Bitcoin’s potential.

Paxful, the peer-to-peer Bitcoin marketplace, is hosting a series of online sessions aimed at the African market. These one-hour events are designed to offer a compelling insight into cryptocurrencies for those who know little about what they are and their potential impact. Some of the continent’s best-known companies and individuals are also getting involved in the seminars.

Championing Africa

The first session was an “Ask Me Anything,” with the two co-founders of Paxful, Ray Youssef and Artur Schaback. This gave members of the Paxful community in Africa a chance to ask burning questions about the platform’s future plans for growth and development.

Meanwhile, the second session took a broader view of the crypto industry and how it can have a positive effect on the African economy. With COVID-19 causing employment opportunities to dry up, another seminar focused on how Bitcoin can deliver an alternative source of income for young people.

With businesses struggling to survive and charities finding it harder to raise funds during the pandemic, the age of the coronavirus means philanthropy has never been more important. Paxful’s third session shone a spotlight on how Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be used to give back to communities.

Further seminars are due to take place later in the month, too. On June 11, Paxful hosted a discussion on the challenges of completing Know Your Customer checks in Africa and what is being done by prominent companies in the crypto space to overcome them.

Bitcoin Futures Traders Bet on Bullish Price Action, but Not Too Fast

Bitcoin futures open interest is currently at an all-time high as traders expect more upside for BTC’s spot price.

Bitcoin (BTC) futures trading has been on a high since July 21 with both the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Bakkt seeing sizeable increases in volume and open interest for their contracts. This resurgence in BTC futures comes as the spot market value of the largest crypto by market capitalization reached a new 2020 high.

Two months on from the May 2020 halving event, BTC has begun to show signs of the anticipated bullish advance. Bitcoin usually sets a new all-time high in the year following a block reward subsidy decrease, with BTC optimists stating the trend will continue.

Amid the current positive price action for Bitcoin, bullish sentiment appears to be gathering steam in the BTC futures market. Long positions currently outnumber shorts by almost 9-to-1, which means that any significant downward retracement could see a cascade of liquidations on optimistic bets, especially for traders with overleveraged longs. Back in mid-March 2020, the market panic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic saw Bitcoin fall to $3,800. This drop caused a cascade of forced liquidations, especially on derivatives exchanges like BitMEX.

Polkadot’s ‘canary network’ has tripled in price this month, with Kusama having unveiled an ambitious plan to relay blockchain transactions from Mars.

Polkadot’s (DOT) mainnet launch rally has seen many associated projects produce parabolic gains during August.

Polkadot’s pseudo-test network or ‘canary chain’, Kusama (KSM), has been among the month’s strongest performers, rallying from less than $10 at the start of the month to an all-time high of $35 two days ago.

Less than six months ago, KSM was trading for only $1.50. Kusama is now the 62nd-largest crypto asset with a $253 million market cap and a $34 million 24-hour trade volume.

Remarking on KSM’s aggressive gains, Messari’s Wilson Withiam tweeted:

“The once wholly experimental, unaudited trial network meant to serve as a sandbox for Polkadot developers is now worth almost $300M.”

Withiam noted that the Web3 Foundation previously stated that 1% of the DOT supply would be allocated to Kusama’s stakeholders and community — suggesting KSM may comprise “a future claim on DOT.” However the researcher points out that Kusama is currently trading at a 600% premium over 1% of DOT’s market cap.

“Most sane investors might find this irrational, even by crypto standards.”

Following Kusama’s recent hackathon, the project has launched an ambitious project in partnership with fellow Polkadot ecosystem member Robonomics to develop “an interplanetary architecture of the Kusama network” capable of relaying data between Mars and Earth.

The project, dubbed ‘Kusama on Mars’, will seek to mitigate the changing signal transit time resulting from the constant motion of the planets by building a parachain with “non-constant block time.”

The architecture would see a dedicated blockchain live on Mars that communicates with other chains hosted from Earth. The project has been informed by the United Nations’ 1979 Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

Big mining move: Bitcoin’s hash power increases 42% in two days

It appears many Chinese miners have completed their annual migration from Sichuan, with Bitcoin’s hash rate spiking more than 40% in two days.

The hash power of the Bitcoin (BTC) network has jumped by roughly 30% over the past 24 hours, which if sustained, suggestsg a major difficulty adjustment may soon be incoming.

According to Coinwarz, Bitcoin's hash ratecurrently sits at 157.5 exahashes per second (EX/s) after briefly pushing above 160 EH/s. As of this writing, BTC hash power has increased by 42% in two days.

Blockchain technology and staking service provider Bison Trail has announced the launch of its Query and Transactions Clusters, or QT, protocol to help developers build on Facebook’s forthcoming Libra network.

Libra QT offers a bridge between Libra’s pre-mainnet and off-chain systems, allowing dedicated off-chain infrastructure to read and write data to the blockchain.

Bitcoin is now “too important to ignore” given its $1 trillion market capitalization, according to a new report by Deutsche Bank.

The report published Wednesday states that the price of bitcoin (BTC, -4.49%) could continue to rise as long as it continues to attract entry from asset managers and companies.

However, the cryptocurrency is expected to remain volatile due to limited tradeability.

Australia offers $4.6M to blockchain pilots targeting mineral supply chain, food industry

The government of Australian is offering A$3 million (US$2.3 million) in grants to two pilots that will develop blockchain-based solutions targeting the mineral supply chain and food and beverage sectors.

Through its Blockchain Pilot Grants program, the government is offering the funding in a bid to demonstrate the potential for blockchain to reduce regulatory compliance burden for businesses. It will offer the funding to two projects, which can either be a business or a publicly funded research organization.

In its announcement, the government revealed that the objective of the blockchain pilots will include reducing compliance costs for businesses, promoting blockchain literacy, developing blockchain solutions for the government, and supporting the inclusion of blockchain in broader policy work.

Tesla's market value set to gain $50 billion on record EV deliveries

The stock jumped nearly 8% in pre-market trading and it was on track to hit its highest in over a month.

The company said on Friday it was encouraged by the strong reception of its Model Y crossover in China and it was quickly progressing to full production capacity.

Analysts remained hopeful as despite a global chip shortage that has slammed the entire auto sector, various supply chain issues and rising competition, Tesla still managed to produce roughly the same amount of vehicles in the first quarter as in the fourth quarter.

At least three brokerages raised their price targets on Tesla’s stock. Brokerage Wedbush was the most aggressive, increasing it by $50 to $1,000, much higher than the median price target of $712.50, as per Refinitiv data. Wedbush also raised its rating to “outperform” from “neutral”.
