GitHub Roaster: Roast a GitHub Profile

GitHub Roaster is a fun web app designed to roast GitHub profiles. All you have to do is enter your username, and it will generate a pretty funny and I'd say, a pretty accurate roast. Currently, it's running using GPT-4o-mini because it is way cheaper than GPT-4o.

This has been developed by Rubi, the developer of Lokal.so.

Adhityaa turned his Kindle into an e-ink monitor, achieving 3-4 fps on a Paperwhite 3. Here’s a quick guide:

1. Jailbreak your Kindle, you can follow the instructions from the LanguageBreak thread.

2. Write a program to receive files on port 8000 and then invoke eips to draw the images on the screen. He had written a Go program but lost the source code. [Eips Wiki]

3. Use screencapture on macOS or something similar on other OSs to repeatedly capture the screen. Process these images with ImageMagick to match the Kindle’s display requirements. Then, transfer the images to the Kindle using netcat.

Flipkart Launches 10-Minute Delivery Service in India

Walmart-owned Flipkart has entered India's quick commerce market with "Flipkart Minutes," offering 10-15 minute deliveries in parts of Bengaluru. The service provides a wide range of items from groceries to smartphones, with free delivery on orders over Rs 100 ($1.2). This move puts Flipkart in direct competition with established players like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart in the fast-growing sector.

Analysts view the quick commerce market positively, with Blinkit's valuation reportedly surpassing its parent company Zomato's food delivery operations.

Microsoft Banned Young Interns from Being Alone with Bill Gates

A new book titled "Billionaire, Nerd, Savior, King: Bill Gates and His Quest to Shape Our World" by Anupreeta Das alleges that Microsoft management restricted young interns from being alone with Bill Gates due to his "flirty" behavior.

The book claims Gates made advances towards women at work and even asked female employees out for dinner while in an administrative role. It also touches on his infidelities, which angered his wife Melinda for a long time, leading to their divorce in 2021.

Google loses massive antitrust lawsuit over its search dominance

A U.S. judge ruled that Google violated antitrust laws by creating an illegal monopoly through billions spent to become the default search engine. This marks a significant win for federal authorities against Big Tech's dominance.

The ruling paves the way for a second trial to determine potential remedies, possibly including a breakup of Google parent Alphabet. The legal process could extend for years. Google's parent company plans to appeal. The decision is a victory for U.S. antitrust enforcers and has bipartisan support.

The court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly.

Proton VPN adds ‘Discreet Icons’ to hide app on Android devices

Proton VPN has released updates for its Windows and Android apps to help users combat censorship and protect themselves in authoritarian regions. Key features include a "Discreet Icon" setting that disguises the VPN app as a weather, notes, or calculator app, making it less detectable during physical checks.

Additionally, Proton VPN is introducing "Stealth" mode on Windows and expanding its server infrastructure to twelve countries with low freedom and democracy ratings. These servers, located in nearby countries, simulate local IP addresses to enhance user privacy and security.

WhenFS: Turn your Google Calendar into a FUSE filesystem

It whimsically supports the following features:

• Create a filesystem out of existing Google Calendars, or create a new one from scratch
• Read and write files, directories and... well, just files and directories
• Mount your friends' WhenFS calendar file systems to share files in the silliest way possible

WhenFS operations start at the FUSE file system layer, facilitated by fuser. The filesystem sits on top of a write-through object cache, which itself sits on top of an abstract data storage interface with swappable calendar API backends.

Some subreddits could be paywalled, hints Reddit CEO

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has hinted at potential paywalled subreddits as a future revenue source, alongside testing AI-powered search results. This follows Reddit's recent moves to monetize, including charging developers for API calls and signing a deal with Google for training data, which led to widespread protests. Huffman emphasized that while the free version of Reddit will continue, paywalled subreddits could offer exclusive content.

He suggested that the company might experiment with paywalled subreddits as it looks to monetize new features. “I think the existing, altruistic, free version of Reddit will continue to exist and grow and thrive just the way it has,” Huffman said. “But now we will unlock the door for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built that may have exclusive content or private areas, things of that nature.”

macOS Sequoia makes it harder to run apps that don’t follow Apple’s security rules

In macOS Sequoia, Apple is tightening security by disabling the Control-click shortcut to bypass Gatekeeper for opening unsigned or unnotarized apps.

Users must now go to System Settings > Privacy & Security to review and allow such apps.

Developers are urged to ensure their apps are properly signed to avoid these extra steps for users.

Hackers could spy on cellphone users by abusing 5G baseband flaws, researchers say

A group of researchers from Pennsylvania State University revealed security flaws in 5G basebands used in smartphones, which could allow hackers to spy on victims. They presented their findings at the Black Hat conference and released a tool called 5GBaseChecker on GitHub for further research.

The vulnerabilities affected processors from Samsung, MediaTek, and Qualcomm, used in devices from brands like Google, OPPO, and Motorola. Exploiting these flaws, hackers could send phishing messages or downgrade connections to older protocols, making eavesdropping easier. Most vendors have since patched the identified vulnerabilities, with Samsung and Google confirming the fixes.

• Vertical tabs make it easier to scan information and switch between tasks.

This work is still very much in progress.
