Chromium browsers found sending user data to Google, raising privacy & regulatory concerns
Chromium-based browsers like Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Brave have been found sending user data to Google through a preinstalled extension called "hangout_services." which shares information such as CPU and GPU usage, memory usage, processor details, and logs of visits to Google domains. These APIs are exclusive to Google's sites, possibly giving their services a performance edge.
Non-Chromium browsers like Firefox don't have this extension, which may affect their performance on Google sites. Google claims the extension enhances user experience and security. The European Commission, already investigating Google under the Digital Markets Act, may scrutinize this further due to privacy concerns and potential violations.
Notably, Brave has announced the extension is currently disabled by default and will be removed in a future update.

5.14.0-427.13.1.el9_4.x86_64. Another issue, related to the
falcon_lsm_serviceable kernel module provided from CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor/Agent security software suite, suggested disabling the module. Problems also occured in Debian and Rocky Linux. Here's what JackC said on Hacker News:
Crowdstrike took a day to respond, and then asked for a bunch more proof (beyond the above) that it was their fault. They acknowledged the bug a day later, and weeks later had a root cause analysis that they didn't cover our scenario (Debian stable running version n-1, I think, which is a supported configuration) in their test matrix. In our own post mortem there was no real ability to prevent the same thing from happening again -- "we push software to your machines any time we want, whether or not it's urgent, without testing it" seems to be core to the model, particularly if you're a small IT part of a large enterprise. What they're selling to the enterprise is exactly that they'll do that.

Google is cracking down on low-effort and potentially risky Android apps. The updated Spam and Minimum Functionality policy, effective August 31, 2024, will remove apps that crash, lack content, or don't offer utility. Text-only apps, single wallpaper apps, and unresponsive apps are most at risk.
This move aims to improve app quality and user safety. In 2023, Google blocked 2.28 million policy-violating apps and rejected 200,000 submissions to protect users.

Telegram zero-day allowed sending malicious Android APKs as videos
A zero-day vulnerability in Telegram for Android, named 'EvilVideo,' allowed attackers to send malicious APKs disguised as video files. This flaw affected Telegram
Threat actor 'Ancryno' sold the exploit on the Russian-speaking XSS hacking forum. It was patched in version 10.14.5 on July 11, 2024.
A command and control server (C2) was used by the payloads at 'infinityhackscharan.ddns[.]net.' Two malicious APK files were found using that C2 on VirusTotal [1, 2] that pretend to be Avast Antivirus or an 'xHamster Premium Mod.'
The exploit required users to enable the installation of unknown apps and it didn't affect Telegram's web or desktop clients.

Wizards,
I know the last week has been intense, with the buzz about a potential acquisition. While we are flattered by offers we have received, we have chosen to continue on our path to building Wiz.
Let me cut to the chase: our next milestones are $1 billion in ARR and an IPO.
Saying no to such humbling offers is tough, but with our exceptional team, I feel confident in making that choice.
The market validation we have experienced following this news only reinforces our goal – creating a platform that both security and development teams love. We are grateful for the faith our employees, investors, and customers have in us as we build the best cybersecurity company in the world.
Thank you for your hard work and focus during these days, which helped us stay on track and finish the quarter stronger than ever. As we always say: LFG.
