Google Gemini is working on a YouTube Music extension

The YouTube Music extension in Gemini will allow you to play, search, and discover your favorite songs, artists, playlists, and more. You can search for songs, play a radio for a mood, and discover new music.

When you enable the extension, Gemini will get access to data from your YouTube Music account, like your playlists, playback history, and preferences. Information from YouTube Music could also be shared with other extensions if that data is included in your conversation.

The YouTube Music extension for Gemini will also differ from the “Music Provider” feature, which lets you set the default app for playing music.

OpenAI and Stack Overflow are partnering OpenAI and Stack Overflow are partnering to enhance their respective products and services: • OpenAI will utilize Stack Overflow's OverflowAPI to improve its AI models with enhanced content and feedback from the Stack…
Stack Overflow bans users en masse for rebelling against OpenAI partnership

Many users are removing or editing their questions and answers to prevent them from being used to train AI — decisions which have been punished with bans from the site's moderators. The moderators also changed the questions back.

Ben posted on Mastodon about his experience editing his most successful answers to try to avoid having his work stolen by OpenAI. He added that:
[The moderator crackdown is] just a reminder that anything you post on any of these platforms can and will be used for profit. It's just a matter of time until all your messages on Discord, Twitter etc. are scraped, fed into a model and sold back to you.

Amazon Prime Video ads are about to get more intrusive

Amazon will roll out three new ad formats for Prime Video later this year. Shoppable carousels will soon appear during ad breaks in shows and movies that present viewers with a "sliding lineup" of products they can buy on Amazon. That essentially makes this an ad within another ad, and it even "automatically pauses" if interacted with to give viewers time to browse.

TV shows, movies, and live sports will also show interactive brand trivia ads that can provide rewards "like Amazon shopping credits" and pause ads that bring up a translucent overlay, allowing viewers to directly add the promoted product to their Amazon carts. Amazon says this overlay will only appear while the video is paused.

Prime Video users who want an ad-free experience have to pay Amazon an additional $2.99 per month on top of their existing subscription, as usual.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink reports trouble with first human brain chip

The first invasive brain chip Neuralink embedded into a human brain has malfunctioned, with neuron-surveilling threads appearing to have dislodged from the brain.

Neuralink's invasive implant includes 64 flexible threads carrying a total of 1,024 electrodes that can detect neuronal activity. The company's proprietary surgical robot inserts those flexible threads individually into the brain.

It remains unclear why the threads moved from their placement, but one hypothesis is that there was air trapped inside Arbaugh's skull after the surgery, a condition called pneumocephalus. The possibility of removing the implant was considered after the problem was identified.

Arbaugh's safety does not appear to be negatively impacted, However, the retraction of the threads lowered the patient's bits-per-second (BPS) rate, which is used to measure how quickly and accurately a patient with an implant can control a computer cursor.

Dell API abused to steal 49 million customer records in data breach

A threat actor known as Menelik put the data up for sale on the Breached hacking forum on April 28th, with the moderators soon taking down the post.

This data breach contained customer order data, including warranty information, service tags, names, installed locations, customer numbers, and orders.

Menelik stole the data after discovering a portal for partners, resellers, and retailers that could be used to look up order information. He could access the portal by registering multiple accounts under fake company names and had access within two days without verification.

The threat actors emailed Dell on April 12th and 14th to report the bug to their security team. However, they harvested 49 million records before contacting the company.

OpenAI’s GPT-4o Model Gives ChatGPT a Snappy, Flirty Upgrade

OpenAI has unveiled a new version of its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, which is designed to respond more quickly and engagingly to user input. The new model, called GPT-4o, allows ChatGPT to respond to voice, image, and video input, and to adopt different emotional tones during conversation.

Some AI researchers have warned that the long-term implications of deploying programs that mimic and respond to emotions could be unwelcome. A team at Google DeepMind last month released a research paper exploring the ethical risks that may arise as AI assistants become more capable. Among other things, the researchers warn that such assistants could become highly persuasive and addictive.

NotebookLM gains podcast-like audio overviews with live Q&A

Google is upgrading NotebookLM, for asking questions about a set of documents, with new “audio overviews” that generate a podcast-like discussion between two speakers.

This feature was presented from the perspective of someone who learns best when listening rather than just reading. In the on-stage example, NotebookLM was given a set of simple physics lessons as its base context. By generating an audio overview, the tool generated a conversation between two speakers and voiced both participants in real time.

Google is infusing AI into Android with Gemini app and on-device Nano

Gemini Nano is a new, 3.8B parameter that is designed to run on-device and can process not just text input but also audio and images. It’s coming later this year “starting with Pixel” and will be used for:

• Clearer descriptions with TalkBack: TalkBack will soon be able to automatically generate more useful image descriptions. This will help people with visual impairments who can’t see images, especially when those images don’t have alt text already.

Scam detection:
A new feature that processes voice calls to detect and warn you when the person on the other end is trying to scam you. The feature will look for conversation patterns commonly associated with scams, like when a “bank representative” asks you to urgently transfer funds. If so, your phone will buzz and show a warning. This feature is opt-in and will be processed on-device by Gemini Nano.
