Google Play Store can now simultaneously download multiple Android apps

However, This updated behavior only triggers on new installs, while it just works with two apps at a time. (You can see how a third download remains “Pending” until something from the first pair finishes.)

As of today, Google Play’s simultaneous downloads do not apply to application updates *yet*, hopefully.

YouTube Now Wants to Show You Ads When You Pause Videos

These ads will show up when you pause an ongoing video you watched. The ads will take up the screen while the video you were watching is paused. The video will be shrunk down and ads will fill up the player. You will need to dismiss the pause ad to resume watching the video.

Pause ads on smart TVs were already under pilot testing, as announced in YouTube’s Brandcast event last year. Google’s Vice President Philipp Schindler shared the results of this experimental test during Alphabet’s first quarter earnings call. According to him,
"Initial results show that Pause Ads are driving strong brand lift results and are commanding attention."

iPads join iPhones in requirement to follow strict EU rules

iPadOS will now have to comply with the rules that allow users in Europe to download apps from outside the Apple App Store, uninstall apps preloaded on iPads, and select default services like browsers from choice screens.

The Commission's investigation found that Apple presents the features of a gatekeeper in relation to iPadOS, as among others:

Apple's business user numbers exceeded the quantitative threshold elevenfold, while its end user numbers were close to the threshold and are predicted to rise in the near future.

End users are locked-in to iPadOS. Apple leverages its large ecosystem to disincentivise end users from switching to other operating systems for tablets.

Business users are locked-in to iPadOS because of its large and commercially attractive user base, and its importance for certain use cases, such as gaming apps.

Apple has now six months to ensure full compliance with the DMA obligations as applied to iPadOS.

Systemd wants to expand to include a sudo replacement, "run0"

With systemd v256 we are going one step towards this. There’s a new tool in systemd, called "run0". Or actually, it’s not a new tool, it’s actually the long-existing tool “systemd-run”, but when invoked under the "run0" name (via a symlink) it behaves a lot like a sudo clone. But with one key difference: it’s not in fact SUID. Instead it just asks the service manager to invoke a command or shell under the target user’s UID. It allocates a new PTY for that, and then shovels data back and forth from the originating TTY and this PTY.

Lennart Poettering also talks about the weaknesses of sudo, and how it has a large possible attack surface (SUID Binary, network access, LDAP configurations, and other types of plugins). A better privilege escalation system should be in place for 2024 security standards.

Also, Lennart has mentioned that it will tint your terminal background in a reddish tone while you are operating with elevated privileges. It will also insert a red dot in the window title while you operate with privileges.

Google Phone starts rolling out ‘Audio Emoji’

The list of "Audio Emoji" includes:
• Clapping 👏
• Laughing 😂
• Party 🎉
• Crying 😢
• Poop 💩
• Sting 🥁

When you, as the caller, select one of these "Audio Emoji," the Google Phone app will play a fun animation while a sound effect plays for a couple of seconds. The sound effect is heard on both ends of the phone call. There's a "cooldown" in between that prevents you from playing sounds back to back.

There’s a button to access it in the overflow menu, but there’s also a chip that appears in the main calling interface.

Audio Emoji is rolling out via the latest Google Phone update in the beta channel, version 128. It will likely launch for all users in the weeks to come.

Telecom industry seeks ban on sale of WiFi 6E routers in India

The COAI, whose members include Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, in a letter to the Department of Telecom on April 15 said the sale of equipment for 6 GHz band utilisation, which has not yet been assigned for this purpose or has not been declared as licence-exempt by the government, is illegal and should be banned immediately in the country.

The COAI Director General SP Kochhar said that using such WiFi devices operating in the 6 GHz band will render customers responsible for these unauthorized transmissions, placing the burden of liability on consumers and shifting the onus of responsibility for such unauthorized transmissions from the real offenders to the consumers.

OpenAI may launch search engine to take on Google

Popular tipster Jimmy Apples on X platform has claimed that OpenAI is expected to host an event on May 9, a week ahead of Google's annual I/O event (May 14).

In a recent podcast with Lex Fridman, Altman emphasized OpenAI's desire to avoid simply replicating Google Search. "I find the current model boring. The question shouldn't be about building a 'better' Google Search. It's about fundamentally improving information discovery, utilization, and synthesis," he explained.

It is widely reported that OpenAI is said to have used some of Microsoft Bing's resources to build its search engine.

This could also render Perplexity AI obsolete.

After being inactive for 3 years, Neofetch is now archived!

The owner archived the GitHub repository on Apr 26, 2024 and is now read-only, which means that the development for Neofetch has ceased. However, the development seemed to stall a few years back, as the pull requests and issues were ignored, and there were no new commits since 2020.

Here are some alternatives to Neofetch:
hyfetch - Actively maintained Neofetch fork
Fastfetch - Like Neofetch, but written in C
screenFetch - Bash Screenshot Information Tool
macchina - Currently in maintenance mode (bug fixes)
Archey - Written in Python

The entire Rabbit R1 Fuck-up, in one post.

A while ago the Rabbit R1 was announced which many people were curious about. Well... it was basically a scam in short. Rabbit R1 is an Android app which people CAN RUN ON NORMAL ANDROID PHONES.

Now, that's cool and all. Ofcourse, Rabbit denied the claims as well...

But well.... the source code of R1 has also been leaked. Yep, the entire source code has been leaked. Again, Rabbit tries to deny it to do 'damage-control'.

🌐 The video showing R1 as an Android app.

✈️ Link to the launcher (magisk module. it launches but won't connect to Rabbit servers anymore.)

Spotify leaks suggest lossless audio is almost ready

Spotify’s current bitrate tops out at 320kbps, but that could soon change if screenshots taken from version 1.2.36 of Spotify by Redditor OhItsTom are accurate.

They show what users could expect from the lossless feature, including a device compatibility checker and lossless streaming quality of up to 1,411kbps, and it could go even higher.

Spotify is internally referring to the feature as “enhanced listening” instead of HiFi now.
