Canva acquires Affinity to fill the Adobe-sized holes in its design suite

Web-based design platform Canva has acquired the Affinity creative software suite, positioning itself as a challenger to Adobe’s grip over the digital design industry. Canva announced the deal on Tuesday, which gives the company ownership over Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher.

While announcing the deal, Canva said:
While our last decade at Canva has focused heavily on the 99 percent of knowledge workers without design training, truly empowering the world to design includes empowering professional designers too. By joining forces with Affinity, we’re excited to unlock the full spectrum of designers at every level and stage of the design journey.

Affinity applications will remain separate from Canva’s platform, but that some small integrations should be expected over time.

Nvidia’s AI chip dominance is being targeted by Google, Intel, and Arm

A group formed by Intel, Google, Arm, Qualcomm, Samsung, and other tech companies is developing an open-source software suite that prevents AI developers from being locked into Nvidia’s proprietary tech, allowing their code to run on any machine and with any chip.

The group, called The Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL), told that technical details for the project should reach a “mature” state by the second half of this year.

While UXL says the project will initially aim to open up options for AI apps and high-performance computing applications, the group plans to eventually support Nvidia’s hardware and code, too.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference returns June 10, 2024

Apple has announced that it will host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) online from June 10 through 14, 2024.

Reports suggest Apple may be developing its own generative AI models or partnering with companies like Google, OpenAI or Baidu in this area. There's even a possibility Apple might open its ecosystem to allow for wider AI integration by developers.

In addition to the focus on AI, WWDC is likely to feature the usual software updates for Apple devices. This could include long-awaited features like customizable app placement on iPhones and updates to existing apps like Freeform. There are also rumors of new AirPods models, including a more affordable option and a noise-canceling upgrade. While AI may be a highlight, WWDC is still expected to deliver a range of improvements across Apple's software offerings.

Select X users will get free access to Premium and Premium+ features

Anyone with over 2500 verified subscriber followers will get free access to premium features. A profile must have over 2,500 followers who have a paid subscription to X. Similarly, those who have over 5000 verified subscribers will receive all the benefits of a Premium+ subscription free of cost.

It’s important to note that if a profile has a subscriber base of over 2,500 users, X won’t offer premium features. Instead, one needs to have over 2,500 verified users who have paid for either Basic, Premium, or Premium+ subscriptions.

What the hell are you doing in the CPU Department, Microsoft?

Microsoft and its partners (Intel, Qualcomm, AMD) are developing "AI PCs" with enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities for Windows. Microsoft's requirements for these PCs include specialized hardware like Neural Processing Units (NPUs), cutting-edge CPUs and GPUs, access to their Copilot AI software, and a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard. More details about Microsoft's AI vision for Windows are still pending.

Still, I don't even get the point of this.

Google in talks to acquire 22.5-acre in Navi Mumbai for maiden India captive data centre

Alphabet Inc.’s Google is in advanced talks to buy a 22.5-acre land parcel in Navi Mumbai’s Juinagar for building its first-ever captive data centre in India, said people with direct knowledge of the development. The potential deal is estimated at around Rs 850 crore given current property rates in the vicinity and MIDC’s transfer charges.

The transaction is at an advanced stage and may get concluded anytime soon. The proposed captive data centre may have a capacity of a couple of hundred megawatts given the large size of the land parcel.

While Google has inked a few deals to lease space at colocation data centres in Navi Mumbai and Noida, this will be the first data centre to be developed by the company.
