Google's Desktop Search Introduces Topic Filters for Improved Search Results

Google has introduced the new feature for desktop search engine that will suggest filters the refining search results based on selected topic. When users search for a particular query, Google will now show topic filters at the top of the search results page. The filters will be based on the user's search query and will enable them to quickly access the specific content they are looking for. The feature is intended to make it easier for users to navigate through the vast amount of information available on the internet and quickly find the content they need.

The New York Times and Politico will not pay for their staff to obtain Twitter's verified badge, according to recent reports.

Twitter now offers verified check marks only through a paid subscription, starting at $7 for individuals and $1,000 for organizations in the US. Twitter had previously announced that several accounts would lose their verified badge as the social media company begins winding down its legacy verified program.

The New York Times will not pay for Twitter's verification badge and will not reimburse reporters for Twitter Blue for personal accounts, except in rare instances where this status is essential for reporting purposes. Politico also will not pay for its staff’s Twitter blue verifications. The White House will also not pay to have its staff’s official Twitter profiles continue to be verified.

TikTok fined £12.7m for misusing children's data

TikTok has been fined £12.7m by the UK's data watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), for failing to protect the privacy of children. The investigation found that the video-sharing site used the data of children aged under 13 without parental consent, and despite the rules requiring children under 13 to have parental consent to use the platform, many were able to set up accounts without this. The ICO estimates that up to 1.4 million UK children of this age used the platform in 2020, and that their data may have been used to track and profile them, and potentially present them with harmful or inappropriate content.

The new Outlook for Windows app finally supports Gmail accounts

New Outlook for Windows Preview now supports third-party accounts, beginning with Gmail accounts, and soon adding Yahoo and iCloud, as well as the ability to connect your mailbox through IMAP. The updated Outlook for Windows also allows the use of Google Calendar and Contacts, with a modern codebase, in addition to several features that make email writing and management easier and more fun, such as rich editing, spelling, and autocomplete suggestions.

The updated calendar features Google Calendar support, the ability to add multiple shared calendars, supporting multiple time zones, and adding daily weather in Calendar view. Improvements to the package tracking, flight reservations, and reminders to reply to important messages are also included. The new Outlook for Windows will continue to improve with personalization options, offline support, and native ICS file type support.

The news comes several years after Google pulled the launcher from the Play Store.
