An unconfirmed number of civilians were murdered in an airstrike on Wednesday 09 November by the federal forces on the town of Mendi, located approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) west of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

🇺🇬 Ebola hits Uganda hard with a "worrying" trend

The particular strain of Ebola that is spreading across Uganda is caused by the Sudan virus, which has a mortality rate of between 41-100%.

With no vaccine or treatment available, the outbreak is shaping up to be the third largest on record.

Official government figures indicate that at least 51 people have died and 132 people have been infected at time of writing.

In the morning, population of Rutshuru, in the province of North Kivu, woke up to the sound of artillery fire from the Congolese army

The artillery fire is coming from the south, from Kibumba, another town on the National Road 2 to Goma. The bombing comes three days after two Congolese army fighter jets and two helicopter gunships struck rebel positions.

🇺🇸🇪🇬 Biden meets with Egypt's El-Sissi on COP27 sideline

President Joe Biden arrived Friday in Egypt for a global climate meeting, known as COP27.

Shortly after arriving, Biden met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi to discuss the two nations' strategic partnership, the Israel-Palestinian conflict and regional security issues.

For his part, Biden said the two nations are “continuing our dialogue on human rights” and added that he hopes they'll be “closer, stronger in every way”.

🇳🇬 At least 12 killed in petrol tanker explosion in Nigeria's north central Kogi State

The tanker had a brake failure along a major road in the Ofu council area on Thursday night when it collided with a vehicle obstructing the highway, causing a fireball, a police spokesman told The Associated Press.

The vehicle “crushed cars on the way” and “12 people were killed” - all burnt to death, said William Ovye Aya with the Kogi police command.

🇧🇼 Orange marks its 5G debut in Africa with Botswana switch-on

Orange has switched on 5G services in Botswana, its first African market to receive the technology.

5G network in greater Gaborone and Francistown will cover 30 percent of the population. Other cities are set to follow next year.

Through its subsidiary Orange Botswana, the telco has kicked off its 5G drive on the continent, with plans to extend this to other markets in Africa and the Middle East.

🇦🇴🇷🇼🇨🇩 Angolan President arrived in Rwanda as part of regional efforts to normalize relations between Rwanda and the DRC

Angolan President Joao Lourenço arrived in Rwanda on Friday for mediation between Rwandan authorities and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which accuses Kigali of supporting M23 rebels who seized several localities in Rutshuru territory, in the eastern DRC.

President Lourenço had already managed to have a roadmap signed last July between Paul Kagame and his Congolese counterpart Félix Tshisekedi in Angola during a tripartite meeting.

The truce had been observed for several weeks before fighting resumed last October.

🇸🇴 12 al-Shabab terrorists killed in central Somalia

"The army foiled an attempted terrorist attack on a military camp in Bordar town in HiIraan province," Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Abdullah Ali Anoud said in a statement granted to the official SUNA news agency.

The ministry spokesman also said that three members of the army were injured in the attack.

🇦🇴 Court in Angola sentences ex-army officers and bankers for fraud

A court in Angola has jailed dozens of former soldiers belonging to the presidential guard for up to 14 years for fraud and embezzlement in a high-profile mass corruption trial.

Forty-nine people including officers employed during the era of former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos and linked to the presidential security service, as well as bank workers, went on trial in June. They faced different charges, including embezzlement, fraud and abuse of power.

🇰🇪🇿🇦 Kenyans to enter South Africa visa-free from January

The presidents of South Africa and Kenya said Wednesday they have resolved a long-standing visa dispute and Kenyans will be able to visit South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days in a calendar year.

South Africans already get free visas on arrival in Kenya, while Kenyans were charged and required to provide proof of sufficient funds and return flight tickets.

The new agreement is set to take effect on Jan. 1.

🇨🇮 Ivory Coast signs hosting agreement for Nations Cup

Officials from the Ivory Coast government signed a formal hosting agreement for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The 2023 Nations Cup was originally scheduled for June and July next year, but was moved for 2024 to avoid the rainy season in Ivory Coast.

The signing is significant as it all but ensures that the next finals, which will actually take place in 2024, will be held in the West African nation.

Aid to Ethiopia’s war-ravaged Tigray region is yet to resume despite a recent truce, international humanitarian agencies have said, even as the United States has urged Addis Ababa to respect the agreement and allow assistance.

Under a ceasefire agreement signed on November 2 between Ethiopia’s government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the party that controls Tigray, the federal government pledged to work with humanitarian agencies to expedite the provision of aid.

🇫🇷 France unveils new Africa military strategy

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the end of its Barkhane anti-militants mission in Africa after over a decade, saying a new strategy would be worked out with African partners.

The move, he said, was the "consequence of what we have experienced" in recent months and a new strategy would be worked out within the next six months.

French forces have faced growing hostility from some who see them as the ineffective occupying force of a former colonial power, and Macron pulled them out of Mali this year as relations soured with the country's military rulers.

Turkish and South African firms met Friday in Johannesburg to explore investment opportunities.

“Our (Turkish) economy is one of the fastest growing economies in the region. In the past 19 years Türkiye’s economy has been growing at an average of 5.4% but in the first quarter of this year it grew to 7.4%,” Yasemin Esenlik, a representative of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Investment Office told after the meeting.

Kenyan soldiers landed in the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, as part of a regional military operation targeting rebels in the conflict-torn region.

This week, Kenya's parliament approved the deployment of just over 900 troops to the DRC as part of a joint military force from the East African Community (EAC).
