#6 Documentary: Online Dating

▶️ More and more people turn to the internet in search of a partner. Watch this video of a Singaporean couple that met online.

🆕 Monday is for discussions and debates! Today we will have a debate on Afandi English Chat (@afandi_english_chat) from 9 to 10pm (or longer if you can’t stop).

The question for today is “Is online dating a good thing?”

How do I know my team? Just roll the Telegram dice and off you go! 🎲

🎲 Even numbers (2, 4, 6) = Online dating is a good thing

🎲 Uneven numbers (1, 3, 5) = Online dating is a bad thing

❗️ Do not just debate with your own opinion but use the dice. That makes the debate less emotional. We don’t want any fighting!

#33 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Today’s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

▶️ Nick is an 🇺🇸American high school student. He’s just an ordinary guy who loves to hang out with (=spend time with) his friends. One of his buddies (=close friend) is Daniel, the son of a Jewish family that recently moved to the United States from 🇮🇱Israel.

After a party the boys go over to Daniel’s place. Nick feels hungry and helps himself to a portion of cereal (=food made of grain usually eaten with milk, e.g. cornflakes) before going to bed. The next morning during breakfast Daniel’s mother seems angry about something but Nick cannot figure out what it is.

Why does Daniel's mother seem angry?
Well done!

👍 It’s indeed the kosher food issue. In traditional Jewish families meat and dairy (=milk products) are never combined and should not even come into contact with the same plates and bowls. Jews are also not allowed to eat pork, and kosher rules are more complex than the halal rules of Muslims.

👎 Hospitality is holy to many people in the world, and there is nothing very special about it in Israel.

👎 There is nothing that tells Jewish families not to have guests or only Jewish guests.

👎 Cereals are a common food in Western countries, especially breakfast cereal. It doesn’t play any role in Judaism (=the Jewish religion).

#70 Our favourite mistakes: Pronunciation

▶️ Try pronouncing the following words:
applicant
• assistant
• confident
• current
• different
• important
• instant
• intelligent
• recent
• significant
• student
• urgent

What do these words have in common?

❗️ They all end in -ant or -ent. Many students pronounce [e] as in “get” but actually it should be [ə] as in “the”.

#1 A Good Laugh: Funny exams

🆕 The good thing about learning English is that you can do it without even thinking about it. In this series of posts we want to use this trick while enjoying a good laugh.

▶️ Exams are a serious matter and not every student can pass. But when you know you can’t pass, try at least to fail in style (=in a cool way)!

#36 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Have you been to TikTok?

Imagine that, you go to Mars for some shopping and learn how to drive at Tesla. Sounds impossible? Well, Uzbeks make it possible by giving small businesses big names.

Foreign visitors may see just another copyright violation here but let’s dig deeper:

A good alternative
Instead of opening yet another “Mini Market” or “Book Café” here are more interesting and memorable names and themes.

Conventionalism
You can’t be too unique when choosing a name in Uzbekistan. Naming businesses after brands or famous products has become a normal thing to do.

Copying as compliment
Westerners often see copying as an attempt to get some kind of unfair advantage. But it doesn’t have to be. It may actually express admiration.

---Vocab---
📍violation = breaking a rule 📍dig deeper = think about sth more deeply 📍memorable = easy to remember 📍attempt = try 📍admiration = looking up to sth/sb
