#34 Travelogue Uzbekistan: The White Gold
The cotton season seems to be a neverending one in Uzbekistan. You can find cotton in rather hostile habitats like in metro stations, on bridges or at bus stops. It seems that cotton is more than just a crop and that Uzbeks are very proud of it. Or should they?
Good reasons
Uzbekistan has the perfect climate for cotton, produces loads of it and all parts of the plant can be used. That should be a blessing. Cotton is not only a beautiful plant but also essential for the country’s textile industry.
Bad reasons
This crop has a complicated history, not only in Uzbekistan. Large monocultures have led to pollution and disasters like the vanishing Aral Sea. Cotton is also just a raw material, it doesn’t make the country rich if it’s not used there.
---Vocab---
📍hostile = unfriendly 📍habitat = natural home 📍crop = farm plant 📍blessing = sth good that makes people happy 📍monoculture = growing only one kind of crop

Dear subscribers,
You probably didn’t notice it but yesterday was a truly historical date – the first anniversary of Afandi English! And so I posted … Nothing! 🎉
Running a channel is a lot of work, and that work is not always appreciated in this world full of TikTok and Instagram zombies. Afandi English will become less wordy and more interactive, using @afandi_english_chat as a platform for discussions and debates as well as consultation with special guests.
My vision for Afandi English is a learning community in which people exchange information and views, get to know each other and improve their English in the process without even realising it.
If you’ve enjoyed this channel over the past year and don’t want it to die please help me spread the word. This is 2021 and everything needs advertising, even when we know that the best things in life are free!
Best,
Mr “Afandi” Hoffmann

#11 IELTS DOs & DON’Ts: Writing
▶️ In Task 1 you will be given a graph that you should describe. It usually contains a lot of numbers.
❌ DON’T describe numbers aimlessly while using big words. Not all numbers are significant and readers cannot digest more than a few numbers.
✅ DO look at the graph carefully and decide which of the numbers are important. Replace numbers by chunks like “more than half” or “only very few”, etc. In this way you can demonstrate your understanding much better.

#69 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar
▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Do’stingizga telefon qilishingiz, ko’rishingiz va undan so’rashingiz kerak, agar siz uni kuta olsangiz u u sizga yordam bera olishi mumkin.
❌ Perhaps you think it is:
You should call to your friend, greet to him and ask from him, maybe he can help to you if you can wait him.
✅ Well, it should be:
You should call your friend, greet him and ask him, maybe he can help you if you can wait for him.
❓Why?
❗️ Verbs usually collocate with certain prepositions. Unfortunately these can be different in different languages. Learn new words with sentences, not without.
❗️ Keep in mind:
• callto sb
• greetto sb
• askfrom sb
• helpto sb

#35 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Been a year
The lockdowns were a strange time, no matter where in the world you lived last year. Think how scared we were of corona then and how terrible a lockdown is for the economy. However, on a personal level the lockdowns produced not only losers but also winners:
Lockdown winners …
… were quick to adapt to the new situation. Some turned to books, some to gardening, sports or other hobbies. It really wasn’t all that bad, especially also for family life.
Lockdown losers …
… couldn’t do their job and failed to think of meaningful activities. They turned to computer games or social media, or just sat in their mahalla eating sunflower seeds.
See the pattern? Winners are self-motivated, they don’t need orders to get going!
🤓 P.S. Did you know Afandi English is a child of the lockdown?
---Vocab---
📍turn to sth = start doing or using sth new 📍pattern = regular way in which sth happens 📍get going = start
