#32 Travelogue Germany: Patriotism
Patriotism, or I should probably say the lack of it, is always an interesting topic when it comes to Germany. Interesting because Germans are so ambivalent about it. Let’s explore three German concepts:
“Erbsünde”
This means basically “inherited sin” – a sin that isn’t actually your own but your parents’ or grandparents’. What sin could that be? Of course it’s about Nazi Germany.
“Lokalpatriotismus”
“Local patriotism” can be the better kind of patriotism, at least for Germans. They can be very proud of their “Heimat”, i.e. hometown, and rarely try to hide their dialect.
“König Fußball”
“King Football” has proven to be an effective remedy for Germans’ lack of self-love. Especially since Germany’s 2006 World Cup it’s completely okay to wave German flags again, but for football only.
---Vocab---
📍ambivalent = unsure about one’s feelings 📍remedy = medicine 📍wave (verb) = move sth from side to side

#8 Movie Time: Richard Jewell (2019)
▶️ Today’s movie is based on a real story. It’s about a security guard in 🇺🇸America who is accused of a bomb attack. He seems very suspicious (=not to be trusted) and both the media and government agencies seek to exploit (=use sth for one’s own advantage) his case.

#18 It’s a strange world: Nudging
❓Why is it that every time we go to a supermarket we end up (=finally doing sth) buying more than we planned?
❗️The truth is we are gently pushed, or “nudged”, to buy things that we don’t actually need. So gently, in fact, that we don’t even realise it. And not only in supermarkets – there are countless examples of psychological tricks used in other businesses and public life, too.

#2 Corona: Corona childhood
Children in corona-crazy countries are not to be envied (=wishing that you had someone else’s things or talents). Social distancing on the playground? That seems difficult for children to understand, so playgrounds just get shut. And when the children ask why someone explains it to them like this: “You don’t want to kill your grandmother, do you? So keep away from other children!” A lost generation of corona kids or an unclear number of preventable deaths among old people – what’s worse?

👍 Kazakhstan is the right answer. Yes the guy looks East Asian and is eating with chopsticks, but the trained Afandi eye must have spotted some Cyrillic writing in the background. Just for your information, I took this picture in Almaty and the guy is an ethnic Dungan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungan_people).
👎 Taiwan, Vietnam and North Korea are all chopsticks countries but don’t use Cyrillic. Simple as that!
