#19a Travelogue Kyrgyzstan & Turkey: Mid-air language issues

On the plane from Bishkek ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฌ to Istanbul ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท cabin crew handed out Covid-19 forms for entering Turkey. The forms were in Turkish and English. Several passengers approached the busy air hostesses in Russian for help with filling in the forms but none of them spoke even a word of Russian. At some point, one of them just shouted "English!!!" after a stubborn passenger's repeated attempts.

I wonder what the Kyrgyz passengers thought - a) the cabin crew should speak Russian, b) I should speak English or c) Kyrgyz and Turks should understand each other.

c) is Panturkism โ€“ the idea that all Turkic nations should be united. I heard one air hostess asking a passenger: โ€œDo you want chay or su?โ€ โ€“ Itโ€™s a start.

---Vocab---
๐Ÿ“cabin crew = people working on planes to serve passengers ๐Ÿ“approach sb = ask sb for help or information ๐Ÿ“air hostess = female cabin crew ๐Ÿ“stubborn = not giving up ๐Ÿ“attempt = try

#17 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ The Zhous are a ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณChinese family living in Sรฃo Paulo, ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ทBrazil. They have recently arrived and hold good jobs at a Chinese company. Their 4-year-old son goes to a nearby kindergarten with mostly local children as it is close to their home. After a month of classes, the Chinese mother finally talks to her sonโ€™s teacher. In a heated discussion with the local teacher she expresses her dissatisfaction. Why?

๐Ÿ‘‰@afandi_english๐Ÿ‘ˆ #culture_quiz

What's the problem?
Good job!

๐Ÿ‘ Chinese parents are indeed very ambitious about their childrenโ€™s education and think that itโ€™s never too early to study.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Yes, Chinese often take safety very seriously and may not let their children play unsupervised. But that doesnโ€™t mean Brazilians are careless.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Crime rates are high in Brazil but not really among children.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Brazilians love kids and donโ€™t expect them to understand the world just yet.
#4 IELTS DOs & DONโ€™Ts: Reading

โ–ถ๏ธ Your ability to understand written English can make all the difference, not just in the Reading section.

1) โŒ Donโ€™t only read IELTS reading sections. The texts are too short to give you real knowledge and too short to make you think in English. โœ… Do extra reading and watch documentaries about common topics of IELTS reading sections.

2) โŒ Donโ€™t limit your reading to academic texts if you struggle with them. โœ… Do keep the natural order of reading materials โ€“ at first stories, then free voluntary reading about topics of interest, and then only academic reading. (according to Krashen, 2011)

3) โŒ Donโ€™t stick to classroom style intensive reading for as many details as possible. โœ… Do practice skimming (reading for gist) and scanning (flying over the text searching for specific details). You need these subskills because of the time limit.

โ—๏ธ For general advice on reading check out #13 Learn to learn of 28 September! ๐Ÿ‘†

#53 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
1๏ธโƒฃ Bu kitoblar juda qiziqarli.
2๏ธโƒฃ Men hamma kitoblarni oโ€˜qidim.
3๏ธโƒฃ Boshqa kitoblaringiz bormi?

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
1๏ธโƒฃ This books are very interesting.
2๏ธโƒฃ I read every books.
3๏ธโƒฃ Do you have another books?

โœ… Well, it should be:
1๏ธโƒฃ These books are very interesting.
2๏ธโƒฃ I read all the books.
3๏ธโƒฃ Do you have (any) other books?

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ As it happens so often, students get mixed up with singular and plural because the Uzbek bu, hamma and boshqa can be used with both singular and plural. Keep in mind that this, every, each and another is always singular in English.

#19b Travelogue Kyrgyzstan & Turkey: More mid-air language issues

Weโ€™re still on that interesting flight from Bishkek to Istanbul. Something else happened that made me think Kyrgyz and Turks should really understand each other without using Russian or English, if only they try.

When looking at those Turkish-English Covid-19 forms my Kyrgyz seat neighbour was totally puzzled, not understanding a word of what was written there. I asked him if he needed help and then explained it all in Uzbek. And โ€“ voilร  โ€“ he understood!

Now try speaking Uzbek to a Kyrgyz in Kyrgyzstan or Kyrgyz to an Uzbek in Uzbekistan and you may get negative reactions. They could understand if they tried but they just donโ€™t feel they should. But an emergency situation can change everything.

---Vocab---
๐Ÿ“form = a document that you fill with information about yourself ๐Ÿ“puzzled = confused ๐Ÿ“ voilร  = (from French) used when saying sth surprising

#3 Movie Time: The Terminal (2004)

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s movie is a classic with Tom Hanks about a man from a ficticious (=invented, non-existing) post-Soviet republic who gets stranded (=gets stuck, cannot go anywhere) at ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธNew York airport because a crisis broke out (=suddenly started) in his country while he was in the air and America revoked (=took back, cancelled) his visa. He then starts living inside the airport terminal (=airport building) where many interesting things happen. The story is only half made-up as it is inspired (=given an idea) by an Iranian man who got stuck at Paris airport for 18 years, neither allowed to enter the country nor able to return home.
