#10 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Business acumen

Uzbeks have a thing for business and even a sudden demand for products can be satisfied rather quickly. Here are 3 examples:

1) Masks. Just a week into the lockdown Europe couldn’t find enough masks while in Uzbekistan they were being sold for peanuts. A Chinese friend wanted to help and send masks from China – I said no thanks.

2) Disinfection tunnels. Where did they come from so quickly? Again, some quick-witted businesspeople did their magic. Never mind they’re getting scrapped now.

3) Coffins. Elder Russian citizens seem to be among the victims of Covid-19. From my window I can see carpenters making more coffins every day. 😞

Every crisis brings new opportunities. Few people know this better than Uzbek businessmen!

---Vocab---
πŸ“acumen = ability to think and judge quickly πŸ“have a thing for sth = be keen on sth πŸ“peanuts = (here) very little money πŸ“quick-witted = clever πŸ“scrap sth = throw sth away, esp. sth big

#15 Tongue twister: Yes we can!

❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister today:

▢️ How many cans can a canner can if a canner can can cans? A canner can can as many cans as any canner can, if a canner can can cans.

Translation:
Agar bitta konservachi konserva bankalarini konservalay olsa, u qancha konserva bankalarini konservalay oladi? Agar konservachi konserva bankalarni konservalay olsa, u boshqa konservachi konserva bankalarini konservalagandek shuncha ko’p konserva bankasini konservalay oladi.

❗️Pay attention to:

πŸ”˜ Weak forms – Distinguish between β€œcan” (noun), β€œcan” (main verb) and β€œcan” (modal verb). The noun and the main verb have to be pronounced fully as kΓ¦n while the modal verb is reduced to its weak form kΙ™n, unless it stands at the end of a phrase:
➑️ can = strong ➑️ can = weak
How many cans can a canner can if a canner can can cans? A canner can can as many cans as any canner can, if a canner can can cans.

#15 University Vocab: Course Modules

❓At school students study together in classes but how about universities?

πŸ”Ž There are usually no stable groups we can call β€œclasses”. Instead, students attend different course modules. Americans are more likely to call them courses while in Britain people tend to speak of modules.

πŸ”Ž From each course module you collect credit points for exams or course work like essays. In order to graduate you need a certain number of credits.

πŸ”Ž There are some course modules that you have to take and some that you can choose. The required ones are called core modules while the others are electives.

❗️ In a modular system you can put your own timetable together. You can also decide if you want to study in the recommended time or graduate later as you might be working part-time. As long as you have your credit points you can finish your studies.

#8 Afandi Quiz: Mysterious song

Today’s quiz is about a mysterious song from a mysterious country! Can you find the right country? Pay attention to the language and style.

πŸ‘‰@afandi_englishπŸ‘ˆ #song_quiz
Afandi English
This song is from ...
Good job, guys! If only the US presidential election had such a clear winner…

πŸ‘ This song is indeed from Indonesia! It is sung in the local language of West Java (Sundanese) and has some rhythms and melodies of Gamelan music, an influential musical tradition of Indonesia.

πŸ‘Ž The Philippines are geographically and linguistically not so far off. However, the country was strongly influenced by its Spanish and American colonisers – so much so that traditional influences in pop music are unlikely.

πŸ‘Ž Nepal is very close to India. The high-pitched female voice fits that but the style of the music isn’t really similar to anything from the Indian subcontinent.

πŸ‘Ž Madagascar, that big island belonging to Africa, was way off. African music sounds different in every way.
#44 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▢️ Please translate the following sentence:
Do’konga borsangiz tekinga paket beriladi.

❌ Perhaps you think it is:
If you go to the shop they will give you a packet / pocket for free.

βœ… Well, it should be:
If you go to the shop they will give you a plastic bag for free.

❓Why?

❗️ The Russian/Uzbek ΠΏΠ°ΠΊΠ΅Ρ‚ and the English packet are what we call β€œFalse Friends” in translation. They seem easy to translate but actually mean different things.

❗️ And packet is not the same thing in British and American English.
β€’ In British English, a packet is a container in which goods are sold, especially cigarettes, crisps or biscuits (AmE: pack).
β€’ In American English, a packet is a smaller container for powder or liquids (BrE: sachet).
β€’ A bigger plastic or paper bag that you get in a shop is also called carrier bag (BrE) or shopping bag (AmE).

❗️ Pocket is of course totally wrong. Ouch!

#14 YouTube Channel Recommendation: Wall Street Journal

β›“ Link: www.youtube.com/user/WSJDigitalNetwork

πŸ“Š English Level: Advanced

πŸ”€ Subtitles: Available

πŸ’¬ Topics: News, technology, lifestyle, economy

πŸ’‘ Content: Wall Street Journal may sound like financial news to you but they actually cover a broad range of topics. Most relevant perhaps are their videos about technology and how technology changes society (check out the series β€œMoving Upstream”). If you follow world news you will also find high-quality videos about current affairs. Some of those videos, however, are about Americans topics.

#11 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Uz-ography

A curious design element that has become a common sight in schools and on monuments is the oddly unique shape of Uzbekistan on a globe – Uzbekistan as the only country in the world, an insular nation (yes, even surrounded by oceanπŸ‘†). It strikes me every time I see it because the difference to what Uzbekistan is in my mind couldn’t be bigger.

I like to think of Uzbekistan as both in the middle and in between the countries and cultures that surround it, definitely not something that can or should be cut out from where it is.

As we can see, putting the real world together can be quite challenging for those who have internalised Uz-ography. But hey, it’s a start!

---Vocab---
πŸ“curious = here: strange πŸ“a common sight = sth that can be seen in many placesπŸ“ odd = strange, unusual πŸ“insular = isolated, inward-looking πŸ“sth strikes sb = sth surprises sb πŸ“internalise sth = deeply take sth in
