#76 Travelogue Germany: Greener than Green

Germans have always been sure about one thing – to save the world you have to start at home. Under Hitler it was about saving the human race from degeneration and in the pandemic Germans have proven to be particularly zealous about combatting the virus with tons of rules. But let’s focus on the good side of that same coin – the environment!

Renewable energy
Half of the electricity produced comes from renewable sources like wind and solar energy. You can see many houses that have solar panels on their roof.

Cyclism
Riding a bike is no sign of poverty in Germany. On the contrary, it shows that you care about the environment and your health.

Climate action
Some people, especially young and left-leaning ones, demand more government action when it comes to climate change.

You could praise the Germans for their commitment to save the world, but you could also argue that they moralise and lack real-life problems.

#79 Afandi Quiz: What is this thing?

Here’s a strange-looking thing. What could it be?

This thing is a …
Mmmh!

πŸ’‘ This thing was a French fry holder for cars. In the US, French fries are typically sold in a format that perfectly fits the size of the holder. French fries is American English. Americans may buy French fries on the go (=while driving or walking) at a DriveThru (=fast food restaurant where you pick up food in your car) McDonald’s and then consume them in the car while driving. The British word is chips, but in Britain they are thicker, usually wrapped in thin paper and eaten with vinegar rather than ketchup.
#11 A Good Laugh: Success

▢️ Did you know β€œSuccess” could be a name? Actually it is a common one in πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation. Check out how a clever little girl named Success outsmarts (=be smarter than someone else) the adults around her.

#117 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▢️ Please translate the following sentence:
Boshliq kabinetidami yoki ko’chadami?

❌ Perhaps you think it is:
Is the boss in his cabinet or on the street?

βœ… Well, it should be:
Is the boss in his office or outside?

❓Why?

❗️ Cabinet exists in English but doesn’t have the meaning of room. The main meaning is group of ministers in a government and a secondary meaning is a slightly old and formal word for cupboard, especially one in which important things are stored.

❗️ On the street means literally on the street and nothing else. From the Uzbek sentence it’s not clear where exactly the boss is, the correct translation is therefore outside.
