#3 Know Your World: The Amish and Covid-19

โ–ถ๏ธ Hereโ€™s a short documentary about how the super-traditional and hyper-Christian Amish people of America have handled the coronavirus crisis. It makes you think quite a bit!

The subtitles are automatic ones from YouTube. Hopefully helpful anyway!

#64 Afandi Quiz: Mysterious song

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a mysterious song from a mysterious country! Can you guess where itโ€™s from? Pay attention to the language and style.

๐Ÿ‘‰@afandi_english๐Ÿ‘ˆ #quiz #song_quiz
Oh, so close!

๐Ÿ‘Ž Spain๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ was wrong. Just because that country is more famous doesn't mean it's the right answer! Yes, Spanish language has the 'th' sound [ฮธ] but there should have been a few words of Latin origin that you can find in English as well.

๐Ÿ‘ Greece๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท was correct. The style of the song was 'Southern' enough and the language nothing you'll ever hear from other countries as Greek isn't closely related to any other language.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Czech Republic๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ was wrong. Czech language is Slavic and you would have heard some Russian-sounding words. Lebanon๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ง was wrong, too. The language was clearly not Arabic, nor did the style sound Middle Eastern.

#6 Short Film: A Social Life

โ–ถ๏ธ Hereโ€™s a short film about a lady whose life is a total disaster because of Instagram. While probably no one really lives like that this story still tells you something.

#101 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar & Vocabulary

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
Hatto qishloqlarda ham bankomatlar bor.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
Even there are bancomats also in villages.

โœ… Well, it should be:
There are cash machines / ATMs even in villages.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ Some students think that the word even should always come in the beginning of a phrase. That is only true for even if and even though, but not for even.

โ—๏ธ Even doesnโ€™t need also in English.

โ—๏ธ Bancomat sounds international but isnโ€™t English actually. In British English itโ€™s cash machine while Americans tend to say ATM, which stands for โ€œAutomatic Teller Machineโ€.

#1 Future: Facial Recognition

๐Ÿ†• Anticipate (=expect and be ready for sth) the future with Afandi English. The world is changing rapidly โ€“ damn you if you sleepwalk (=walk while sleeping, getting into a bad situation because you donโ€™t pay attention) into the future and donโ€™t secure your place!

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s video is about the technology behind facial recognition (=finding a person by their face) and how it may change our lives. Switch on the subtitles for better understanding!

#22 Movie Time: When Pigs Have Wings (2011)

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s movie is a ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ชFrench-German-Belgian co-production. Itโ€™s a comedy set in Gaza, one of the Palestinian areas controlled by Israel. Itโ€™s about a poor fisherman who happens to (=coincidental, by chance, unplanned) fish a pig swimming in the sea. Watch how this amusing story unfolds (=develops, happens)!

โ—๏ธ The movie is in Arabic, Hebrew (=the language of Israel) and English. It has English subtitles. Subtitles are an excellent way of pushing you speed up your reading and stop the stupid habit of reading out loud! ๐Ÿ˜‰

#66 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Shop till you drop

If you thought Navruz was in spring youโ€™re only half right. Itโ€™s actually all year round now at Andijanโ€™s brand new shopping complex in Dubai-ish architecture. Whatโ€™s there to explore?

Festive vibes
New Year? Christmas? The songs sound a lot like itโ€™s Christmas but the big illuminated โ€œ2022โ€ outside tells us itโ€™s New Year. The big tree and the old man could both be Santa Claus and Father Frost. Whatever it is, letโ€™s celebrate as it gives us a reason to consume!

Food court
The corporate approach to dining has finally conquered Andijan. That means added value through branding and exciting displays, engineered portions and flavours, standardised procedures and replaceable staff as well as maximum profits through minimising cost by the gram of each ingredient.

At Navruz you can feel international and Uzbeks totally love that. But I hope โ€œKFCโ€ will always just mean โ€œfried chickenโ€, not the actual fast food chain.

#78 Spot Something: Kango qani endi?

โ“ Can you spot chewing gum of the โ€œKangoโ€ brand in this picture? I hate to do unpaid advertising but couldnโ€™t resist taking this photo!
