#62 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Linguistic crossroads

Uzbekistan – the heart of Central Asia. A space of in-between-ness. Between a Russian past and an international future. Between different languages with different alphabets. No wonder that things get a bit messy sometimes:

English
When English words enter the Russian language they are put into the Cyrillic script. As these words travel on to Uzbekistan they are put back into the Latin script but don’t quite match the original English spelling.

Gibberish
English just looks so damn cool, doesn’t it? Right or wrong – who cares? Since when is KFC a dish? And do the French fries really not cost anything?

Russian
Hasty Latinisation can literally spell disaster! The Cyrillic E is YE in Latin and Ж in Cyrillic Uzbek is J in Latin Uzbek, not ZH. Good job, presidential school!

A bit of everything
“Osiyo Trade Biznes” – wow, that’s Uzbek, English and latinised Russian all in one.

📍linguistic = about the science of language 📍crossroads = the place where roads meet 📍Cyrillic script = the Russian writing system 📍gibberish = a non-existing language 📍hasty = rushed, done in a hurry 📍sth spells disaster = sth causes a big problem

#1 Know Your World: Gudetama

🆕 Mondays on Afandi English are for world knowledge, giving you the necessary information to understand and discuss current affairs (=news, things happening in the world). We can find world knowledge in documentaries, infographics, statistics, articles and maps, so let’s look at those!

▶️ Today’s documentary is about Gudetama, a Japanese egg-yolk-shaped cartoon character. Interestingly and unexpectedly, this little thing can teach quite a bit about Japanese culture and history.

#60 Afandi Quiz: Who said it?

🆕 In this new type of quiz you have to guess whose quote (=sth that sb said) the sentence below is.

▶️ “Life is really simple but we insist on (=keep doing sth although it is bad) making it complicated.”

Afandi English
Who said it?
Not bad!

👍 It was indeed a quote of Confucius, ancient China’s most prominent (=important) figure. Regardless of (=no matter) the other options, talking about life and stuff is more the job of a philosopher, isn’t it?
#97 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Qaytib keling, sizni sog’indim.

Perhaps you think it is:
Please come back, I missed you!

Well, it should be:
Please come back, I miss you. (every day)
Please come back, I’m missing you. (right now)
Please come back, I’ve been missing you. (before and still now)

Why?

❗️ There’s no good reason why this sentence should be in the past tense as it expresses a present feeling.

#6 World Food: Ratatouille from 🇫🇷France

▶️ Ratatouille is …

... made with:
Fresh vegetables like tomatoes, courgette (=a vegetable similar to cucumbers but for cooking), aubergine (British English; Americans say “eggplant”), peppers, onions and garlic. The vegetables are stewed (=cooked slowly) with Mediterranean (=from the countries surrounding the sea between Europe and Africa) herbs (=small aromatic green plants) like basil, thyme, rosemary and oregano.

... eaten with:
Any staples (=basic foods), such as bread, rice or pasta. Or as a side dish to meat.

Healthy or not? 🟢
Easy to make? 🟢
Cheap enough? 🟡

#20 Movie Time: Goodbye Lenin (2003)

▶️ Today’s movie is a tragicomedy (=both funny and sad film or theatre play) from 🇩🇪Germany. It’s a story about an East German family during the crazy times of German reunification (=becoming one again). Watch how a hero son takes care of his mother under very tricky (=difficult) circumstances (=conditions, situation).

❗️ The movie is in German with English subtitles. Subtitles are an excellent way of pushing you speed up your reading and stop the stupid habit of reading out loud! 😉
