Deep-fried (=fried in a lot of oil) cod (=a type of fish) in a batter (=a thin dough to cover the fish with before frying) and chips โ€“ deep-fried potato sticks, or what Americans call โ€œFrench friesโ€. Chips in Britain are much thicker than American French fries.

Salt and malt vinegar (=brownish vinegar made from dried grains), ketchup or โ€œchip shop curry sauceโ€, a warm thick sauce that tastes Indian but isnโ€™t.
