Well done!

๐Ÿ‘ This hand-held device is indeed designed to help you catch flies or other insects. You can remove them without touching or killing them.

๐Ÿ‘Ž To cut vegetables itโ€™s not sharp enough, to display holograms itโ€™s not high-tech enough, and to dye flowers โ€“ who does that anyway?!
#18 Featured article: Languages and Climate

๐Ÿ“ Why do languages sound so different? Some of it apparently has to do with the natural environment where languages develop. Read this IELTS-like passage to find out how some scientists come to surprising conclusions.

#27 Tongue twister: Insane Insects

โ—๏ธChallenge yourself with this tongue twister:

โ–ถ๏ธ A big black bug bit a little blue beetle but the little blue beetle bit the big black bug back.

Translation:
Katta qora kana kichik ko'k qo'ng'izni tishladi, lekin kichik ko'k qo'ng'iz katta qora kanani qaytarib tishladi.

โ—๏ธPay attention to:

๐Ÿ”˜ Pronunciation: /g/ and /k/ in the final position are sometimes hard to distinguish. Make sure you do!

#88 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar & Vocab

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
Korona boโ€™p qoldim.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
I was corona.

โœ… Well, it should be:
I have corona. / Iโ€™ve got corona. / I got corona. / I caught corona.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ You cannot translate boโ€™lmoq as be here. Maybe the logic works in Uzbek but when you think about it, how can a person be a virus or a disease?

โ—๏ธ The same applies to virus and grip (flu).

โ—๏ธ The Uzbek original sentence stresses the moment of infection which lies in the past. Therefore the past tense is used. In English you can translate this emphasis as got or caught.

#54 Travelogue UK: The London Underground

If you thought metro systems are more or less the same in the world you couldnโ€™t be more wrong. Cities, just like people, have a character of their own, and what you find under the ground says a lot:

London is old
Dating back to 1863, London has the oldest metro system in the world, and thatโ€™s also what it feels like. The trains make a lot of noise, there is no mobile phone signal, some stations resemble labyrinths and sometimes there really is quite a gap between the train and the platform.

London is expensive
Ticket prices are steep. Prepare to pay $7 for a single journey, or more if you travel during rush hours. Itโ€™s easy to get into the system โ€“ just tap your credit card and save the shock for later.

London is weird
Some stations have truly amazing names, like Seven Sisters, Swiss Cottage, Elephant and Castle, Angel, East India, Barking, โ€ฆ Oh and did you know there was a London Underground Mosquito?

#29 YouTube Channel Recommendation: CNA

๐Ÿ“Š English Level: Upper

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles: Usually available

๐Ÿ’ฌ Topics: News, society, food

๐Ÿ’ก Content: CNA is a Singaporean news channel with a distinctly (=particularly, noticeably) Asian perspective on news. They have a lot of content about Singapore, Southeast Asia and China, and even a documentary about Uzbekistan. Despite some government propaganda (=advertising for the government, trying to influence people) on the channel โ€“ Singapore is a rich but not that free country โ€“ if you agree that the 21st century is the Asian century then CNA is a great source of news for you.
