#37 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Today’s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

▶️ Ron is a middle-aged businessman from the 🇬🇧UK. He used to work for a trading firm but has recently emigrated (=moved to another country) from his rainy native town of Bristol to sunny Cape Town in 🇿🇦South Africa. Inspired (=given a new idea) by the country’s vineyards (=grape farm) he decides to set up a wine trading business, hoping to export local wines to the rest of the world. Unfortunately he finds it difficult to deal with suppliers (=people or companies who provide goods) and feels that for some reason they don’t seem to trust him.

What might be Ron’s problem?
Well done!

👍 South Africans are indeed more relaxed, especially in the countryside. To them, someone dressed formally looks more like a bank manager demanding payment, not so much like a potential (=possible or likely in the future) business partner.

👎 They aren’t particularly difficult to do business with, nor is wine-making a domain (=field of activity) of black South Africans. Plus there is nothing like a prohibition (=prohibiting sth by law, esp. alcohol) there.
#73 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

▶️ Please translate the following sentences:
1️⃣ Siz nimaga bu yerda?
2️⃣ U nima dedi?
3️⃣ Qayerda bo’ldingiz?

Perhaps you think it is:
1️⃣ Why you are here?
2️⃣ What she said?
3️⃣ Where you have been?

Well, it should be:
1️⃣ Why are you here?
2️⃣ What did she say?
3️⃣ Where have you been?

Why?

❗️ Question words are usually followed by a verb or auxiliary.

❗️ Exceptions:
• “What movie did you watch?” – in this case what is a determiner.
• “Why on earth should I do that?” – here why on earth is a set phrase, just a dramatic version of why.

#2 A Good Laugh: Meanwhile in Russia

▶️ Russia – the land of bears, daredevils (=people who do dangerous things), improvisation (=make sth without the right materials), undisguised (=not hidden) emotions and, last but not least (=mentioned last but no less important), vodka!
