#7 Infographic: Pandemics

โ–ถ๏ธ The Covid-19 pandemic isnโ€™t humanityโ€™s first pandemic, nor is it probably the last. Read this infographic for more information about the nature and history of pandemics.

โ—๏ธ Monday is for discussions and debates! Today we will have a debate on Afandi English Chat (@afandi_english_chat) from 9 to 10pm (or longer if you canโ€™t stop).

The question for today: Are vaccines useful in the fight against pandemics?

How do I know my team? Just roll the Telegram dice and off you go! ๐ŸŽฒ

๐ŸŽฒ Even numbers (2, 4, 6) = Vaccines are useful

๐ŸŽฒ Uneven numbers (1, 3, 5) = Vaccines are not useful

โ—๏ธ Do not just debate with your own opinion but use the dice. That makes the debate less emotional. We donโ€™t want any fighting!

Tadaa!

๐Ÿ‘ Vietnam is the correct answer. It was probably easy to tell by the writing. Vietnamese uses Latin script with lots of diacritics (=little dots and strokes a letter to change its pronunciation).

๐Ÿ‘Ž Myanmar was wrong, the local language has its own alphabet, not Latin. South Africa was also wrong โ€“ there should be some English on the picture. Brazil was wrong, the language should have been Portuguese which may contain some recognisable international vocabulary.
#71 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
Bu gapda bu soโ€™z ortiqcha.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
This word is extra in this sentence.

โœ… Well, it should be:
This word is not needed in this sentence.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ Extra has a positive meaning in English. Think of extra money โ€“ thatโ€™s a good thing or not?

#23 Tongue twister: Fuzzy Wuzzy

โ—๏ธChallenge yourself with this tongue twister:

โ–ถ๏ธ Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was he?

Translation:
Fuzzy Wuzzy bitta ayiq edi, Fuzzy Wuzzyning sochi yoโ€™q edi, Fuzzy Wuzzy juda ham fuzzy (=momiq) emas edi, shundaymi?

โ—๏ธPay attention to:

๐Ÿ”˜ Linking โ€“ Consonants in end position and vowels in beginning position are linked together.

๐Ÿ”˜ Weak forms โ€“ The final word โ€œheโ€ is pronounced without the [h] and therefore gets linked to the previous word.

โ–ถ๏ธ Now practice: Fuzzy Wuzzy was อœ a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was อœ he?

#38 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Wow! Here in Andijan?

โ€œI thought I was in Europe last nightโ€, said a friend, and I felt the same. The concert of the Uzbekistan Youth Forum was pretty high standard by any standard. One superstar after the other and all professionally organised. But hey, what wasnโ€™t like Europe?

Whatโ€™s a mask?
In Europe, such a โ€œsuperspreader eventโ€ is unthinkable in corona times. People had to wear a mask at the entrance but it was more like a ticket, something you put into your pocket after you enter.

Ladies & Gentlemen
Where it got crowded there was natural gender separation. People were civilised and security wasnโ€™t tight at all. In Europe there isnโ€™t so much trust between people, and in America even less.

Let the others react
The hosts had a hard time moving the crowds. It felt like me talking to myself in Telegram groups. Only towards the end there was collective euphoria thanks to patriotism, confetti and fireworks.

---Vocab---
๐Ÿ“by any standard = in any case, definitely ๐Ÿ“superspreader event = an event during which many people are infected ๐Ÿ“gender separation = separating men and women ๐Ÿ“tight = here: strict ๐Ÿ“host = here: presenter ๐Ÿ“have a hard time doing sth = have difficulty doing sth ๐Ÿ“collective = all the people together ๐Ÿ“euphoria = short moment of happiness and excitement ๐Ÿ“confetti = small pieces of paper or plastic thrown into the air for celebration
#24 YouTube Channel Recommendation: neo

๐Ÿ“Š English Level: Upper

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles: Available

๐Ÿ’ฌ Topics: Geography, politics, geopolitics

๐Ÿ’ก Content: This channel doesnโ€™t have a huge number of videos but nonetheless some interesting ones. The topics may not seem easy but the English used is plain and not too fast.
