Afandi English
This song is from ...
Good job!

๐Ÿ‘ Sweden ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช was indeed the correct answer. Itโ€™s hard to guess the country from the style of this song, although I feel some Scandinavian (=Northern European) vibes (=feeling you get from a person or situation) of positivity, openness and enthusiasm (=strong interest and eagerness to participate). However, the language is more revealing (=showing sth true and surprising). Those of you who know German must have found some familiar-sounding words.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Mexico ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ was wrong. The language of Mexico is Spanish and Latino (=from Latin America) music tends to be more rhythmic.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ was also wrong. The country is bilingual โ€“ most people speak English but 21% are native speakers of French. However, neither French nor English have the trilling [r] that we can hear in the song.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Bulgaria ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฌ was wrong because Bulgarian is a Slavic language and should have some similarity to Russian.
#19 University Vocab: Teaching Staff

โ“ There are all kinds of people teaching at a university. What are they?

๐Ÿ”Ž Britain and America have different education systems, and other countries have yet other titles and ranks.

๐Ÿ”Ž For practical classes you may have instructors (in ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธAmerican English) or tutors (in ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งBritish English). Some of these may be doctorate students.

๐Ÿ”Ž Lectures and seminars are more theoretical, and they are taught by people on different academic ranks, professor being the highest.

๐Ÿ”Ž In ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งBritain the order is usually lecturer โ€“ senior lecturer โ€“ professor. In ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธAmerica it is instructor โ€“ assistant professor โ€“ associate professor โ€“ professor.

โ—๏ธ Actually there are no regular โ€œteachersโ€ at university. Calling them โ€œteachersโ€ may sound not only informal but also unprofessional or even childish.

#60 Our favourite mistakes: Punctuation

โ–ถ๏ธ Which one is correct?
a) Afandi said I have a donkey.
b) Afandi said โ€œI have a donkeyโ€.
c) Afandi said โ€žI have a donkeyโ€.

โœ… The answer is b):
Afandi said โ€œI have a donkeyโ€.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ Speech marks (also called โ€œquotation marksโ€) are necessary in this case. Many people are lazy with this.

โ—๏ธ Without speech marks โ€œIโ€ refers to the person who wrote the sentence, not Afandi.

โ—๏ธ In English, speech marks are generally on the top, never at the bottom.

#20 Tongue twister: Oh those Mongols

โ—๏ธChallenge yourself with this tongue twister:

โ–ถ๏ธ How many boards could the Mongols hoard if the Mongol hoards got bored?

Translation:
Agar moโ€™gโ€™ul oโ€™rdalari zerikib qolsa, moโ€™gโ€™ullar qancha taxta yigโ€™a olishi mumkin edi?

โ—๏ธPay attention to:

๐Ÿ”˜ Pronunciation โ€“ vowel length: There are short and long vowels in English, which is often a problem for learners. Check out the difference between the short ษ’ and the long ษ”:.

โ–ถ๏ธ Now practice: How many boards (long) could the Mongols (short) hoard (long) if the Mongol (short) hoards (long) got (short) bored (long).

#26 Travelogue Germany: Vegans

Vegetarianism is big in Germany (close to 10% of the population), and 1.6% are vegans. Go to any supermarket and youโ€™ll find a range of meatless meat products, like sausages, burger patties, chicken nuggets and lots more. They are usually made of soya beans. How come?

๐Ÿ”˜ Health
The meat industry is a very dirty industry. Nobody keeps cows or sheep at home but meat comes from factories, from unhappy animals fed with hormones.

๐Ÿ”˜ Environmentalism
People are also worried about their โ€œcarbon footprintโ€, i.e. how much their own behaviour leads to climate change, and meat production is top of the list.

๐Ÿ”˜ Individualism
Try to cook a meal for any Westerner and you will find that they canโ€™t eat this and canโ€™t eat that. They will tell you all kinds of reasons, real or imagined, and that makes them feel special and unique. Plov for everyone? Forget about it.

---Vocab---
๐Ÿ“vegans = people who donโ€™t eat any animal products, including eggs and milk

#19 YouTube Channel Recommendation: Awaken With JP

โ›“ Link: www.youtube.com/channel/UCwUizOU8pPWXdXNniXypQEQ

๐Ÿ“Š English Level: Advanced

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles: Automatic

๐Ÿ’ฌ Topics: Comedy, politics, lifestyle, psychology

๐Ÿ’ก Content: This channel is run by JP Sears, a freakish-looking freak (=a crazy person) with long red hair. He makes intelligent fun of different people and their worldviews. If you enjoy proper good sarcasm (=making fun by meaning the opposite of what you say) you will love this channel. However, in order to understand the jokes your English must be pretty good and you also have to know a thing or two (=a couple of things) about American society and Western culture.

#25 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ Giuliano is an ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡นItalian exchange student studying architecture in Helsinki, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎFinland. He is quite happy with his Finnish university as the facilities (=buildings and equipment for a particular use) are excellent and the study projects are interesting. However, he doesnโ€™t enjoy some of the classes, especially the seminars (=small classes at universities in which students discuss topics).
