#12 It’s a strange world: Workaholism

You work, earn money and use that money to enjoy your life with your family. That’s how it works, right?

❗️Not for some people who work endlessly and forget their friends and family. We call these people “workaholic” – people for whom working is an addiction like drinking alcohol. Find out more about what it’s like when you don’t work to live but live to work.

#8 Go out and teach! Seating

❗️Students sit in rows facing the teacher, right? Well, actually there’s more to it:

🔎 The traditional order. Advantages: Students can follow the teacher be controlled. Disadvantages: They can’t easily interact and always depend on the teacher.

🔎 The U-shape – students sit around a space in the middle of the classroom. Advantages: They can see each other, interact and feel as a group. Disadvantages: Students can distract each other and the teacher may find them harder to control.

🔎 Clusters – the students sit in groups around tables. Advantages: Students can work together and the teacher can easily move around to monitor or participate. Disadvantages: They’re harder to control and can’t easily turn around.

❗️Seating has a huge influence on how well your activities work. Sometimes it’s worth changing! More seating arrangements: www.bookwidgets.com/blog/2019/12/19-classroom-seating-arrangements-fit-for-your-teaching

#7 Afandi Quiz: What’s the word?

Today’s quiz is about a naughty (=badly behaved) seagull (=the bird in the picture).

▶️
You enjoy some quality time by the sea. It’s a warm summer day and so you get an ice cream. Unaware of the danger overhead (=above) you start enjoying your ice cream in the open air. Suddenly a seagull comes out of nowhere and gone is your ice cream.

The seagull has just ... the ice cream.
Not bad but not really good either!

👎 Smacked means hitting something or someone, especially to punish a child. Why would a greedy seagull do that?
👍 Snatched is the correct answer. When you snatch something you steal it with a quick movement, just like that nasty bird.
👎 Stitched is a textile word. When you stitch something you sew two pieces of cloth together or you sew some decoration onto a piece of cloth.
👎 Snapped has several meanings: 1) break sth with a sharp noise, 2) move sth in a position with a sharp noise, 3) suddenly become angry, 4) say sth angrily, 5) try to bite, 6) take a photo – goodness, this must be a super seagull!

#7 Education Video: Changing Education Paradigms

❗️Today’s video is from a lecture by Sir Ken Robinson, a British educationalist who famously argued that we need to radically change our education systems to prepare children for the demands of the 21st century. Robinson passed away earlier this year but his lectures have become classics and live on.

#10 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Business acumen

Uzbeks have a thing for business and even a sudden demand for products can be satisfied rather quickly. Here are 3 examples:

1) Masks. Just a week into the lockdown Europe couldn’t find enough masks while in Uzbekistan they were being sold for peanuts. A Chinese friend wanted to help and send masks from China – I said no thanks.

2) Disinfection tunnels. Where did they come from so quickly? Again, some quick-witted businesspeople did their magic. Never mind they’re getting scrapped now.

3) Coffins. Elder Russian citizens seem to be among the victims of Covid-19. From my window I can see carpenters making more coffins every day. 😞

Every crisis brings new opportunities. Few people know this better than Uzbek businessmen!

---Vocab---
📍acumen = ability to think and judge quickly 📍have a thing for sth = be keen on sth 📍peanuts = (here) very little money 📍quick-witted = clever 📍scrap sth = throw sth away, esp. sth big

#15 Tongue twister: Yes we can!

❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister today:

▶️ How many cans can a canner can if a canner can can cans? A canner can can as many cans as any canner can, if a canner can can cans.

Translation:
Agar bitta konservachi konserva bankalarini konservalay olsa, u qancha konserva bankalarini konservalay oladi? Agar konservachi konserva bankalarni konservalay olsa, u boshqa konservachi konserva bankalarini konservalagandek shuncha ko’p konserva bankasini konservalay oladi.

❗️Pay attention to:

🔘 Weak forms – Distinguish between “can” (noun), “can” (main verb) and “can” (modal verb). The noun and the main verb have to be pronounced fully as kæn while the modal verb is reduced to its weak form kən, unless it stands at the end of a phrase:
➡️ can = strong ➡️ can = weak
How many cans can a canner can if a canner can can cans? A canner can can as many cans as any canner can, if a canner can can cans.
