Good job guys, mostly. This thing is a potato with someone's face printed on it. Ask me why? The northwestern ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธUS state of Idaho hasn't got much else to be proud of than potatoes. Idaho is also known as the โ€œPotato Stateโ€. So what they ended up doing (=finally did) is selling all kinds of merchandise (=products that promote sth or souvenirs), all potato-themed. Besides keychains, fridge magnets and mugs (=cups with handles for hot drinks) you can find:
๐Ÿฅ” potato museum
๐Ÿฅ” potato perfume
๐Ÿฅ” potato football tournament
๐Ÿฅ” potato dog food
๐Ÿฅ” potato baby clothes
๐Ÿฅ” potato hotel
๐Ÿฅ” potato board game

Have they forgotten anything? Let your imagination go wild (=get crazy) in the comments!

#59 Movie Time: Johnny English Strikes Again (2018)

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s film is the third in the Johnny English trilogy (=a series of 3). Rowan Atkinson, better known as Mr Bean, saves the world yet again with a mixture of catastrophic mishaps (=sth goes wrong), impossibly lucky coincidences (=sth comes together unplanned), and sheer (=plain, pure) ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งBritishness.

Watch Johnny English 2.

๐ŸŽ‰Special Day: Where Have All The Flowers Gone?

โ–ถ๏ธ As the world remembers then end of World War II today let's sing an anti-war song that has a truly remarkable (=special) history. American singer Pete Seeger combined an old Irish folk song melody with verses (=parts of a poem or song) from a Ukrainian/Russian folk song and turned it into a protest song that now stands for (=represents, is associated with) pacifism (=belief in or activism for peace) in general and the peace movement of the 1960s and 70s against the Vietnam War.

This version is sung by Joan Baez, a contemporary (=modern) American folk singer famous for her social justice activism.

#145 Our favourite mistakes: Writing

โ–ถ๏ธ Look at the writing above. ๐Ÿ‘†

โ“Whatโ€™s wrong here?
โ—๏ธ The student is using brackets (=these things ๐Ÿ‘‰(...)๐Ÿ‘ˆ) for correction.

โ“Why?
โ—๏ธ The purpose of using brackets for correction is to maintain an orderly look of the text (โ€œchiroylismโ€). Crossing out wrong words would look messy. Unfortunately, brackets do not have this function in English. They are used for giving extra information, not marking wrong words.

โ“What to do instead?
โ—๏ธ Simple. Just cross it out! ๐Ÿ˜

#13 Future: Meat from the lab

โ–ถ๏ธ Is this meat real or fake? Yes itโ€™s meat but no, itโ€™s no itโ€™s not from a slaughtered (=killed for meat) animal. Lab (=laboratory) meat solves a lot of problems but at the same time raises a lot of questions. Watch this report from ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑIsrael.

#50 YouTube Channel Recommendation: Invisible People

๐Ÿ“Š English Level: Various

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles: Mostly provided

๐Ÿ’ฌ Topics: Social problems, biographies

๐Ÿ’ก Content: This channel is a bit of a shocker if you thought that there was no poverty in rich countries. Itโ€™s all about homeless people and their stories of drugs, crime, violence, disability and every other problem you can imagine. The channel gives them a voice and aims to restore (=bring back) their dignity (=respect sb or oneself as a human). Meanwhile it teaches us a whole lot about society.

#7 Know Yourself: The power of repetition

โ–ถ๏ธ Why is it that we go through the education system just once, finish our education and live the rest of our lives? This video by The School of Life rightfully argues that modern education needs to learn from religious education. Why? The power of repetition.

#20 A Good Laugh: How money changes situations

โ–ถ๏ธ Are you worried about your pronunciation? Well one solution to all your problems might just be money! This ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งBritish sketch (=funny short video or theatre performance) from the 1970s is not only funny, it also points to (=mention sth important) a deeper truth.

#1 Travelogue ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฟKazakhstan: Xormanglar!

โ–ถ๏ธ My Kazakh friend hired a bunch of (=some, a couple of) ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฟUzbeks to build his new house. Better quality and also cheaper, he says. Too bad I couldn't really tell him what they were saying to each other as their Xorazmcha (=the dialect of Khorezm in western Uzbekistan) left me (=made me) absolutely clueless (=not knowing, having no idea).

When they talk to my friend everyone tries to adapt and they basically understand each other. Usually Russian would be the language of interethnic (=between ethnic groups) communication but my friend is a Kazakh from China, so he doesn't really do (=use) Russian. And that works just fine! ๐Ÿค“
