▶️ The map shows European countries in different colours, from green to red. The lowest is Turkey with 2.0 and the highest is Belarus with 17.5.

What does this map show?
Well done!

💡 The map was about alcohol consumption. Eastern Europeans consume quite a bit more alcohol than Western Europeans while Muslim Turkey has the lowest consumption. Alcohol is made artificially expensive in Scandinavia through taxation, lessening people’s thirst for it. Meanwhile, Italy has a wine culture but ‘hard alcohol’ is not that common.

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Men ro’zaman. Ro’za tutdingizmi? Og’izni nechada ochamiz?

Perhaps you think it is:
I’m roza. Did you fast? What time do we open our mouth?

Well, it should be:
I’m fasting. Are you fasting? What time do we break the fast?

Why?

❗️ There is no such word as roza in English. Some people insist on talking about Islamic concepts like masjid or reading namoz in the original words or sense. There is no arguing about that, just adapt to the person listening to you. If you talk to foreign Muslims, use them, if not then find more established words like mosque or praying.

❗️ There’s no reason why fast should be in the past tense when you’re still doing it. The right tense is present continuous, i.e. Are you fasting?

❗️ Open one’s mouth sounds rather strange in English. Use break the fast instead.

▶️ Google is one of the “Big Five” US tech companies – Microsoft, Facebook (Meta), Amazon, Apple and Google. The Big Five have come under fire (=been criticised) for being too big, too powerful and too intransparent (=secretive, not open). In this video by Google we can see how the company tries to maintain a friendly appearance while the dimensions (=size, scale) and the need for security are impressive and frightening at the same time.

▶️ Today’s movie is a 🇫🇷French comedy about a family with four daughters that all marry different foreigners and experience every possible culture clash (=conflict) in the process. Not only a must-watch for culture lovers but also a good exercise in speed reading subtitles!

#77 Travelogue Uzbekistan: More than just water

There’s a peculiar design of water bottles in Uzbekistan that seems like it’s from the same brand, but actually all are made by different companies. What’s going on there?

Copying
Why come up with something new when you don’t know if it works? Copying gives you that sense of security. It's even a compliment for the original – it’s so good that it is copied.

Conventions
When products look alike then customers will also recognise them more easily. Like in the UK for instance full cream milk has a blue lid, semi-skimmed milk a green lid and skimmed milk a red lid.

Collectivism
Ultimately
this is a deeper cultural pattern – one of valuing sameness rather than difference. Both producers and customers depend on the judgment of others and want to feel that they are normal.

It’s not just water bottles. It’s also chocolate bars, fake shampoos, numbers on pharmacies or naming shops after famous brands, to name just a few.
