โ–ถ๏ธ Read the article and debate with your fellow subscribers in the Afandi English Chat.

๐Ÿ—ฃ The debate question is: Can cameras and Face ID systems improve the quality of education?

๐Ÿ™‚ If your birthday is between 1 January and 30 June you say YES.
โ˜น๏ธIf your birthday is between 1 July and 31 December you say NO.

A close call!

๐Ÿ‘Ž Iceland was way off. The non-Germanic language and the brisk (=quick, full of energy) style was not really Northern European. It couldnโ€™t have been Bulgarian or Slovak as these are Slavic languages and a little bit similar to Russian.

๐Ÿ‘ Hungary was the correct answer. Hungarian is from the Finno-Ugric family of languages and a distant relative of Finnish and Estonian. It is also an agglutinating language (=a language in which new words are formed by sticking parts of words together), just like Turkic (=Uzbek, Turkish, Kazakh, Uyghur, etc.) languages.
#72 Our favourite mistakes: Writing

โ–ถ๏ธ Whatโ€™s wrong here in these sentences?
โ€ข We had not written
โ€ข It will be writing
โ€ข I shall not have written
โ€ข I am taken

โŒ Perhaps you think about grammar now. Please donโ€™t. Please also donโ€™t think about what these sentences might mean (itโ€™s complete nonsense without context).

โ—๏ธ The problem is โ€ฆ missing full stops (British English =dot to finish a sentence; Americans say โ€œperiodโ€)! Every sentence needs one at the end, unless youโ€™re chatting with someone on Telegram. The same goes for questions. Every question needs a question mark!

#39 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Clean Russians, dirty Uzbeks?

Have you ever seen any cleaning product made in Uzbekistan that has Uzbek written on the front? Soap, shampoo, washing-up liquid, washing powder โ€“ thereโ€™s only a list of ingredients in Uzbek on the back, everything else is written in a mixture of Russian and English. What might be the reasons for this?

Imitation
Imported products are generally trusted and thought to be of higher quality. Customers may assume high quality when it looks foreign, even when itโ€™s not.

Convention
When other products have no Uzbek written on them, why would anyone try to be different? There are different conventions for different types of products.

History
With the exception of soap, most other types of cleaning products were introduced during Soviet times, and that was all about Russian.

โ—๏ธ If you can find a cleaning product with Uzbek writing on the front I will give you 5,000 soum paynet. Max. 5 participants. You have one week!

#37 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ Ron is a middle-aged businessman from the ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งUK. He used to work for a trading firm but has recently emigrated (=moved to another country) from his rainy native town of Bristol to sunny Cape Town in ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆSouth Africa. Inspired (=given a new idea) by the countryโ€™s vineyards (=grape farm) he decides to set up a wine trading business, hoping to export local wines to the rest of the world. Unfortunately he finds it difficult to deal with suppliers (=people or companies who provide goods) and feels that for some reason they donโ€™t seem to trust him.
