#37 Travelogue Uzbekistan: "Bookism"
Books are a symbol of culture, of education and of knowledge itself. Everywhere in the world. But in Uzbekistan they are so much respected that they may seem unreachably far away, like from another world that has nothing to do with our daily life. What makes this issue so awkward?
Free Libraries
That beautiful idea of providing books to the public. Sadly it doesn’t work quite so well because the idea doesn’t come from the public but seems to be some policy thing.
”I like reading books”
Ask someone what their hobby is and you’ll often hear that this someone likes “reading books” rather than just “reading”. Do you believe it?
Textbooks
Teachers often insist on using textbooks page by page. It makes their job easier and is the best way to make students hate books.
---Vocab---
📍awkward = giving you a strange feeling

▶️ Today’s movie is a 🇬🇧British tragicomedy (=a mixture of tragedy and comedy) about a half-🇵🇰Pakistani family in 1970s Manchester – a perfect struggle between cultures!

Dear friends,
❗️It’s time to use our spotting skills for something you hide for us!
How?
1. Choose something for us to spot - a shoe, a tomato, a toy, a flower, a shampoo bottle – whatever really.
2. Take a close-up photo, so we know what we to look for.
3. Hide your item in a photo. Make it not too easy and not too difficult. Take a couple of shots. It should be hard to find but still visible.
4. Send it all to @jochenho by 9pm tonight.
5. We'll vote for or favourite item to spot and then do the spotting at 9:30pm.
Get involved enjoy the buzz!

#7 Infographic: Pandemics
▶️ The Covid-19 pandemic isn’t humanity’s first pandemic, nor is it probably the last. Read this infographic for more information about the nature and history of pandemics.
❗️ Monday is for discussions and debates! Today we will have a debate on Afandi English Chat (@afandi_english_chat) from 9 to 10pm (or longer if you can’t stop).
The question for today: Are vaccines useful in the fight against pandemics?
How do I know my team? Just roll the Telegram dice and off you go! 🎲
🎲 Even numbers (2, 4, 6) = Vaccines are useful
🎲 Uneven numbers (1, 3, 5) = Vaccines are not useful
❗️ Do not just debate with your own opinion but use the dice. That makes the debate less emotional. We don’t want any fighting!

Tadaa!
👍 Vietnam is the correct answer. It was probably easy to tell by the writing. Vietnamese uses Latin script with lots of diacritics (=little dots and strokes a letter to change its pronunciation).
👎 Myanmar was wrong, the local language has its own alphabet, not Latin. South Africa was also wrong – there should be some English on the picture. Brazil was wrong, the language should have been Portuguese which may contain some recognisable international vocabulary.

#71 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary
▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Bu gapda bu so’z ortiqcha.
❌ Perhaps you think it is:
This word is extra in this sentence.
✅ Well, it should be:
This word is not needed in this sentence.
❓Why?
❗️ Extra has a positive meaning in English. Think of extra money – that’s a good thing or not?

#23 Tongue twister: Fuzzy Wuzzy
❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister:
▶️ Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was he?
Translation:
Fuzzy Wuzzy bitta ayiq edi, Fuzzy Wuzzyning sochi yo’q edi, Fuzzy Wuzzy juda ham fuzzy (=momiq) emas edi, shundaymi?
❗️Pay attention to:
🔘 Linking – Consonants in end position and vowels in beginning position are linked together.
🔘 Weak forms – The final word “he” is pronounced without the [h] and therefore gets linked to the previous word.
▶️ Now practice: Fuzzy Wuzzy was ͜ a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was ͜ he?
