#17 It’s a strange world: Guilt vs shame culture

What are you more afraid of? That you do something morally wrong or that people see you doing something wrong?

❗️The answer may be in your culture. If you come from a Western country you're more likely to care about your conscience, not so much about what other people think or say. Non-Westerners, on the other hand, may feel that avoiding shame is the most important thing.

Ouch!

👎 Sudan is wrong, there is no McDonald’s in that country and perhaps not too many fancy (=beautiful and expensive) cars either.

👎 Afghanistan is wrong as well. Not developed enough to have a McDonald’s. Big fast food chains don’t set up shop (=start doing business) in war-torn (=destroyed by war) countries.

👍 Brunei is correct. This small country surrounded by Malaysia is a rich monarchy (=country with a king/queen). The yellow banner (=long cloth with a message) is for the sultan’s birthday. The country’s national language is Malay and is written in both the Arabic and Latin scripts.

👎 Myanmar was clearly wrong. The country does have a Muslim minority but the Arabic script isn’t used in the country.
#9 IELTS DOs & DON’Ts: Notes for essays

▶️ The big DO here is DO WRITE NOTES before you start writing your essay, OK? Here are some points to keep in mind:

1) Timing Don’t rush this and don’t get nervous when you see other people starting to write. Do invest around five minutes in taking notes. Good notes can save you from running out of ideas or going off topic.

2) Style Don’t waste your time by writing whole sentences and don’t squeeze tiny notes into a corner. Do be generous with space as you may still add some notes during essay writing when you have more ideas. Use symbols, bullet points, subpoints, arrows, numbers – whatever helps you structure your thoughts.

3) Content Don’t copy from the task or write obvious things like “firstly” or “in conclusion”. Do write arguments, counterarguments and topic-related high-level vocab that you want to use – all in the shortest form possible. Just enough to remind yourself.

#63 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Boshqa variyant bor.

Perhaps you think it is:
There’s another variant.

Well, it should usually be one of these:
a) There’s another way.
b) There’s another option.
c) There’s another version.
d) There’s an alternative.

Why?

❗️ The word “variant” does exist in English but is rarely used. You can find it only in scientific or other academic contexts.

#29 Travelogue Germany: Corona, corona, corona

The virus is back in Uzbekistan and the question is how crazy do we want to be. As crazy as Germany? Read this for a comparison.

Social distancing …
… is everywhere and you notice people almost jumping away from you. I got shouted at by a lady for jumping the queue in a post office. Actually I just didn’t notice any queue because people were standing two metres apart. Supermarkets and shops can only take in a certain number of customers, based on the floor area.

Masks …
… are worn inside public places. Outside it’s okay not to wear a mask unless it’s in a busy city centre where signs tell you to wear one. Even if you pull your mask down just a little bit under your nose you’re in trouble.

Disinfectant …
… is provided everywhere. People use it when entering supermarkets, almost like holy water in a church.

---Vocab---
📍jump the queue = not waiting till it’s your turn but push in before others

Dear friends,

We have spotted Afandi many times. It’s now time to use our spotting skills for something you hide for us!

How does it work?

1. Choose an item that subscribers to the channel should spot. It could be anything – a shoe, a tomato, a toy, a flower, a shampoo bottle – whatever really.

2. Take a close-up (=from a short distance) photo of it, so we know what we should look for.

3. Hide your item in a picture that you take. Make it not too easy and not too difficult. Take a couple of shots and choose the best one. Your item should be hard to find but still visible in a low resolution on Telegram.

4. Send your close-up and search pictures to @jochenho by 8:30pm tonight.

5. We will try to spot your item at 9pm on the channel.

Get involved & enjoy the buzz!
