#4 Documentary: 3 women, 3 lives

▢️ Today you're getting as many as (=a big amount) three documentaries that all have – you guessed it – something to do with the International Women’s Day. Although this holiday isn’t so international actually it’s still a welcome opportunity to think and discuss about the role of women in society.

#26 Afandi Quiz: What’s the word?

Today’s quiz is about pugnacious (=willing and ready to fight) senior citizens.

▢️ The English language is notoriously (=known to be bad) difficult for spelling. There are a number of strange homographs – words that have the same spelling but completely different meanings.

Which homographs can you relate to this picture?
Not too bad!

πŸ‘ Fence is the correct answer. While the noun fence is just something made of wood or metal surrounding a piece of land, the picture shows people fencing – fighting with long thin swords. Fencing is also an Olympic sport.

πŸ‘Ž Bear is wrong. The noun bear is the animal we all know and love whereas the verb bear means carry or hold.

πŸ‘Ž Object is wrong. The noun object is an international word meaning thing or item. The verb means disagree or oppose.

πŸ‘Ž Swallow is wrong. The noun swallow is a type of bird while the verb means making food or drink go down from your mouth into your stomach.

πŸ‘Ž Miss is wrong. The noun miss is a form of address for a young woman; the verb means not being able to do something, fail to hit an object or feeling sad because someone or something is not there with you.

πŸ‘Ž Park is wrong. The noun park is a place in town with grass and trees; the verb means putting your car or any other vehicle in a place for some time.

#19 Learn how to learn: Dealing with mistakes

❓ Do you have the feeling that you make too many mistakes in English? Then mistakes are your enemies. But how can they also be your friends?

1️⃣ Mistakes are enemies. They can make us look stupid and feel bad and because of them we cannot score high in exams. Of course we hate them for that. The worst mistakes are the ones you don’t know about. We also call them errors.

2️⃣ Mistakes are friends. When you notice your mistake you actually learn. In fact, you cannot learn without making mistakes. Our brains are unable to produce perfect sentences when learning a language and we must make mistakes.

3️⃣ Mistakes are β€œfrenemies”. We want to speak English without mistakes but at the same time mistakes show us the way. Let’s take mistakes for what they are – a necessary evil.

#20 World Englishes: German English

❗️ German speakers come from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Many of them know English quite well and travel the world, both for business and tourism. So there is a chance that you will hear them or even talk to them at some point in your life!

πŸ”˜ Pronunciation: Like so many people on Earth, German speakers may struggle with the English β€˜th’ sounds. They also tend to over-pronounce the [ɜ:] sound as in girl. Consonants in the end position are always hard in German, so dog may become dock and god may sound like got. [w] may be turned into [v]. German speakers are also bad with linking between words.

πŸ”˜ Grammar: Tenses are less complicated in German, so expect some trouble here.

πŸ”˜ Vocabulary: The word already and can be overused they use or as a tag question, e.g. You are already ready, or? Besides, there is often confusion with similar words that have different meanings, like become and bekommen (to get).

#28 Travelogue Germany vs Uzbekistan: Graffiti

Graffiti belongs to urban landscapes in Europe. You can find it on walls, on buildings, in staircases and lifts, on trains and on billboards, really everywhere. Liberal cities like Berlin and Hamburg have lots of it, conservative cities like Munich have less.

The good kind
Good graffiti is when you make a boring place more beautiful or have a good message that inspires people. It brings a smile to their face and makes life better, even if just a little bit.

The bad kind
Bad graffiti is basically selfish. You just want to share your unimportant message or untalented art. Or worse, society neglects you and you take revenge for it by vandalising the public space. Ouch.

---Vocab---
πŸ“urban = of cities πŸ“billboard = a big sign for advertising πŸ“inspire sb = give sb good new ideas πŸ“neglect sb/sth = not care about sb/sth πŸ“take revenge = do sth bad in return πŸ“vandalise sth = purposely destroy sth
