#19 YouTube Channel Recommendation: Awaken With JP

โ›“ Link: www.youtube.com/channel/UCwUizOU8pPWXdXNniXypQEQ

๐Ÿ“Š English Level: Advanced

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles: Automatic

๐Ÿ’ฌ Topics: Comedy, politics, lifestyle, psychology

๐Ÿ’ก Content: This channel is run by JP Sears, a freakish-looking freak (=a crazy person) with long red hair. He makes intelligent fun of different people and their worldviews. If you enjoy proper good sarcasm (=making fun by meaning the opposite of what you say) you will love this channel. However, in order to understand the jokes your English must be pretty good and you also have to know a thing or two (=a couple of things) about American society and Western culture.

#12 Featured article: Working From Bed (WFB)

๐Ÿ“ Apart from resting, do you like to do your daily life tasks, working on your laptop or checking your phone in the comfy (=comfortable) environment of your bed? It could be bad for you. Read this BBC article to check out why.

#25 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ Giuliano is an ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡นItalian exchange student studying architecture in Helsinki, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎFinland. He is quite happy with his Finnish university as the facilities (=buildings and equipment for a particular use) are excellent and the study projects are interesting. However, he doesnโ€™t enjoy some of the classes, especially the seminars (=small classes at universities in which students discuss topics).

Afandi English
Whatโ€™s the problem with the classes?
Pretty good!

๐Ÿ‘ Finns (=Finnish people) are indeed more tolerant of silence than the rest of us. This often irritates (=makes sb feel strange or annoyed) foreigners in Finland. Combine that with the vivid (=lively, intense) expressiveness (=ability to express oneself) of Italians and you have a recipe for disaster (=sth that must go wrong)!

๐Ÿ‘Ž Finns may use less body language than Italians, and actually everyone in the world uses less body language than Italians. But that is something Italians are aware of, not something that shocks them.

๐Ÿ‘Ž While Finns may not be very emotional when meeting new people they donโ€™t ignore them either.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Finns donโ€™t talk more about private problems than others, rather less than Italians actually.
#8 IELTS DOs & DONโ€™Ts: Listening

โ–ถ๏ธ Listening can be tricky, especially since you can hear the recording only once. How can we maximise our chances?

1) Get visual โŒ Donโ€™t keep doing listening tasks with zero picture in your head. You will always struggle. โœ… Do try to understand daily life abroad. Get an idea of university life, transport systems, restaurants, gyms, etc. Watch TV serials or YouTube videos showing you daily life.

2) Concentration โŒ Donโ€™t lose your focus or interest easily like a TikTok victim. โœ… Do consume videos, articles, podcasts and of course Afandi English posts that take more than a minute to understand. Learn to keep up your attention โ€“ you will need it for IELTS Listening.

3) Accents โŒ Donโ€™t think English is just from abroad and therefore all the same. โœ… Do become familiar with different accents. In the recordings you may hear English from the UK, North America and/or the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa).

#61 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

1๏ธโƒฃ Bu rasm shunday chiroyli.
2๏ธโƒฃ Darsimiz har kuni soat 10da.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
1๏ธโƒฃ This picture so beautiful.
2๏ธโƒฃ Our class every day at 10 oโ€™clock.

โœ… Well, it should be:
1๏ธโƒฃ This picture is so beautiful.
2๏ธโƒฃ Our class is every day at 10 oโ€™clock.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ We need the verb to be here in these sentences, otherwise they are incomplete. Many students know this but still make mistakes.

#8 Self-study: A hippie village in the rainforest

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s video and handout are about an American who moved to Ecuador and started his own special community there. The people living in the community have to keep one basic rule โ€“ love, not money. Check out how it works!

โ—๏ธIf you think this is good material for your self-study, please follow the instructions in #1 ๐Ÿ‘† and the instructions on the handout below ๐Ÿ‘‡.

#27 Travelogue Switzerland vs Uzbekistan: Trusted customers

More and more supermarkets in Europe let customers use self-checkout. Just scan in the products and pay by card or mobile. Of course you can also bring your bag and donโ€™t have to lock it away. Compare that to the supermarket lockers of Uzbekistan telling customers that anyone could be a shoplifter.

What's the difference?

Guilt culture
Where can you just get on a train without anyone checking your ticket? In the guilt culture countries of Northern Europe. People pay because they would feel guilty if they didnโ€™t. More on that soon on Afandi English!

Corona
The pandemic has given cashless and contactless payments a boost. Many Europeans are scared by the idea that they could catch the virus just by touching cash money.

---Vocab---
๐Ÿ“checkout = the place in a supermarket where you pay ๐Ÿ“locker = a cupboard that you can lock with a key ๐Ÿ“shoplifter = sb who steals sth in a shop ๐Ÿ“boost = increase
