#59 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Afandining mashg’uloti kitob o’qish.

Perhaps you think it is:
Afandi’s hobby is reading books.

Well, it should be:
Afandi’s hobby is reading.

Why?

❗️ The word books is not needed in English, unless you want to say that Afandi likes reading books but not magazines or websites.

#7 IELTS DOs & DON’Ts: General English

▶️ Some students look down on General English as if that was something for children. This is very unfortunate because General English is your ticket to IELTS. What else is IELTS if not a test of your General English?

1) Developing vs testing Don’t think you can develop your skills by testing them again and again. Do allow enough time to develop your skills with meaningful practice and interesting topics.

2) Practice Don’t limit yourself to IELTS materials. Do keep good habits like following the news or reading about your subjects of interest in English.

3) Getting ready Don’t practice only IELTS when your level is still far away from the score you want. Do get serious about exam preparation a month or two before you actually take it.

#25 Travelogue Germany: What a waste!

Waste management is a national obsession in Germany. Wherever you go in Germany, rubbish is never just rubbish. Throw your rubbish into the wrong bin and you may face some serious criticism.

What’s behind all this?

Moralism: Separating rubbish is like saying sorry for producing rubbish. Germans are good at saying sorry, for starting two world wars and everything else, too. They never want to be evil again and polluting the world makes them feel very guilty.

Precision: What kind of rubbish are used paper tissues? Paper and cardboard or general waste? Germans love discussing details and try to follow rules 100% correctly. Separating waste is done with engineering precision.

---Vocab---
📍obsession = craziness 📍bin = waste basket, trash can 📍guilty = having done sth bad 📍paper tissue = napkin 📍cardboard = strong, thick paper

#5 Movie Time: Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

▶️ Today’s movie is about a black teenage girl in 🇺🇸Los Angeles who has an exceptional talent for spelling and enters a spelling competition called “Spelling Bee”. She faces many obstacles (=difficulty, sth that makes it harder to get what you want), and you will also face some obstacles when you hear the big big words that she has to spell! Don’t worry, you don’t need to learn those. Just sit back and enjoy.

#4 Infographic: Cultural Types

▶️ People from different countries have lots of misunderstandings. And while we all know that cultures are different we still struggle to explain those differences. For the purpose of facilitating (=making sth easier) international business exchanges there are some theories that are easy to understand but at the same time also too simple and generalising (=saying sth about everyone). Not every person in one country has the same cultural style but it’s a good starting point. Take a look at the Lewis Model.

Good job!

👍 Sweden 🇸🇪 was indeed the correct answer. It’s hard to guess the country from the style of this song, although I feel some Scandinavian (=Northern European) vibes (=feeling you get from a person or situation) of positivity, openness and enthusiasm (=strong interest and eagerness to participate). However, the language is more revealing (=showing sth true and surprising). Those of you who know German must have found some familiar-sounding words.

👎 Mexico 🇲🇽 was wrong. The language of Mexico is Spanish and Latino (=from Latin America) music tends to be more rhythmic.

👎 Canada 🇨🇦 was also wrong. The country is bilingual – most people speak English but 21% are native speakers of French. However, neither French nor English have the trilling [r] that we can hear in the song.

👎 Bulgaria 🇧🇬 was wrong because Bulgarian is a Slavic language and should have some similarity to Russian.
#19 University Vocab: Teaching Staff

There are all kinds of people teaching at a university. What are they?

🔎 Britain and America have different education systems, and other countries have yet other titles and ranks.

🔎 For practical classes you may have instructors (in 🇺🇸American English) or tutors (in 🇬🇧British English). Some of these may be doctorate students.

🔎 Lectures and seminars are more theoretical, and they are taught by people on different academic ranks, professor being the highest.

🔎 In 🇬🇧Britain the order is usually lecturersenior lecturerprofessor. In 🇺🇸America it is instructorassistant professorassociate professorprofessor.

❗️ Actually there are no regular “teachers” at university. Calling them “teachers” may sound not only informal but also unprofessional or even childish.
