Oh dear…

👎 Turkmenistan was wrong. Fair enough, (=That’s reasonable) Uzbekistan’s mysterious neighbour seems like black box (=where we don’t know what happens inside) and this song could be from within. However, the language would sound different, not as close to Uzbek as Turkmen is in the Western ("Oghuz") branch of the Turkic languages.

👍 China was correct. The country is home to your forgotten Uyghur brothers and sisters! The closest relative of the Uzbek language is Uyghur, and these two languages make up the Eastern (“Qarluq”) branch of the Turkic languages. The languages are so closely related in fact that they are mutually intelligible (=can understand each other). Both languages descended (=came from) from Chagatai.

👎 Azerbaijan was wrong. Azeri language is much closer to Turkish than to Uzbek. The style of the song wasn’t like anything from the Caucasus (=the mountains between Russia and the Middle East) area either.

👎 Kyrgyzstan was wrong. The language would have contained more [ʤ] sounds and the style would have been either modern Russianised or traditional nomadic (=of moving people without fixed houses).

#18 University Vocab: Thesis Papers

❓What are thesis papers and what do we find in them?

🔎 A thesis is the final piece of academic writing you need to do before getting your degree. This could be a bachelor thesis, a master thesis or a doctoral thesis.

🔎 In the beginning of a thesis paper you should have an abstract which is a short summary of your research, including the main results.

🔎 A table of contents in the beginning shows which chapter can be found on which page. It is also a good overview of your structure.

🔎 Either in the beginning or the end of your thesis there should be an acknowledgement in which you thank the people who helped you.

🔎 You should write a list of books and articles that you read for your research in the bibliography at the end.

🔎 At the very end of your paper there usually is an appendix in which you list data that is too much to write in the main body. This can contain figures, lists, pictures, graphs or transcriptions.

✅ Well, it should be:
I like learning English because it is very interesting.

❓Why?

❗️ Because is a dependent clause, not a full sentence. Do not start sentences with Because when they belong to the previous sentence. You may start a sentence with Because of, e.g. Because of the rain we decided to stay at home.

#19 Tongue twister: Doctoring doctors

❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister:

▶️ When a doctor doctors a doctor, does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as the doctor being doctored wants to be doctored or does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as he wants to doctor?

Translation:
Qachonki do'ktor do'ktorni davolasa, do'ktorni davolayotgan do'ktor davolanayotgan do'ktorni xohishiga ko'ra davolayabtimi yoki u davolash davolayotgan do'ktorni davolash xohishimi?

❗️Pay attention to:

🔘 Intonation – sentence stress: Help your listener understand the meaning with strong intonation of key words.

▶️ Now practice: When a doctor [introducing a person] doctors a doctor [introducing another person], does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as the doctor being doctored [emphasizing A] wants to be doctored or [clarifying the structure] does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as he himself [emphasizing B] wants to doctor?
