#2 Infographic: The Columbian Exchange

โ–ถ๏ธ Do you enjoy munching (=eating sth noisily) chips, having a decent (=of a good quality) shakarob with your plov or nibbling (=eating small bites of sth) sunflower seeds? Well, none of that would exist without New World (=the Americas) plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, sunflowers and many more. They were brought to the Old World (=Europe, Asia and Africa) by European colonisers about 500 years ago, the first of them being Columbus. Take a closer look at these two infographics to find out what all crossed the Atlantic Ocean and changed the world forever.

#16 Afandi Quiz: Mysterious song

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a mysterious song from a mysterious part of the world! Can you guess where itโ€™s from? Pay attention to the language and style.

๐Ÿ‘‰@afandi_english๐Ÿ‘ˆ #song_quiz
Afandi English
This song is from ...
Well done!

๐Ÿ‘ The Caribbean is where this song comes from, more precisely from the French Antilles (=groups of islands in the Caribbean) and the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. People there speak French creole (=localised version of a European language). The type of music is called โ€œZoukโ€ and is unique to the French Caribbean.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Southern Africa couldnโ€™t have been the right answer. Yes, the song is very rhythmic and โ€œblackโ€ if you like but there isnโ€™t any country in Southern Africa where people speak French.

๐Ÿ‘Ž The South Pacific has some French-speaking islands but music from that part of the world is typically less rhythmic and songs are often sung by several people at the same time.

๐Ÿ‘Ž The Middle East was clearly wrong. Yes, some French is spoken in that part of the world as well but the style of music is nothing like Middle Eastern.
#17 University Vocab: Higher Education

โ“Whatโ€™s higher education and how is it organised?

๐Ÿ”Ž Higher, or tertiary (=third type) education comes after primary and secondary education. That normally means university but actually it also includes colleges and graduate schools.

๐Ÿ”Ž The word college can have very different meanings in different countries. In Britain it can be like a specialised high school or vocational (=about job) school while in America itโ€™s more like a university but of lower status.

๐Ÿ”Ž In American English a university can be called school, e.g. โ€œHarvard is a good school.โ€ In British English "university" is often shortened as uni.

๐Ÿ”Ž Inside universities we usually find faculties and within them departments. But that also varies โ€“ faculties are also sometimes called schools, e.g. โ€œSchool of Economicsโ€.

๐Ÿ”Ž Sometimes attached to a university there is a graduate school for postgraduate (=master or PhD) students.

#52 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar & Vocab

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
2021 yilda koโ€™p pul topmoqchiman.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
In 2021 year I want to find much money.

โœ… Well, it should be:
In 2021 I want to earn a lot of money.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ The word โ€œyearโ€ is not needed in English.

โ—๏ธ In English we donโ€™t โ€œfindโ€ money but we โ€œearnโ€ money.

โ—๏ธ โ€œMuchโ€ is used in negative sentences, e.g. I havenโ€™t got much money. For positive sentences use โ€œa lot ofโ€.

#18 Tongue twister: Best wishes for 2021

โ—๏ธChallenge yourself with this tongue twister today:

โ–ถ๏ธ I wish to wish the wish you wish to wish, but if you wish to wish the wish the witch wishes, I won't wish to wish the wish you wish to wish.

Translation:
Men siz istagan istakni istashni istayman, lekin siz istagan istak jodugarning istagi bo'lsa, unda siz istagan istakni istashni istamayman.

โ—๏ธPay attention to:

๐Ÿ”˜ Intonation โ€“ sentence stress: As you would in your mother tongue, help your listener understand the meaning with strong intonation of key words.

โ–ถ๏ธ Now practice: I wish to wish the wish you wish to wish, but if you wish to wish the wish the witch wishes, I won't wish to wish the wish you wish to wish.

#19a Travelogue Kyrgyzstan & Turkey: Mid-air language issues

On the plane from Bishkek ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฌ to Istanbul ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท cabin crew handed out Covid-19 forms for entering Turkey. The forms were in Turkish and English. Several passengers approached the busy air hostesses in Russian for help with filling in the forms but none of them spoke even a word of Russian. At some point, one of them just shouted "English!!!" after a stubborn passenger's repeated attempts.

I wonder what the Kyrgyz passengers thought - a) the cabin crew should speak Russian, b) I should speak English or c) Kyrgyz and Turks should understand each other.

c) is Panturkism โ€“ the idea that all Turkic nations should be united. I heard one air hostess asking a passenger: โ€œDo you want chay or su?โ€ โ€“ Itโ€™s a start.

---Vocab---
๐Ÿ“cabin crew = people working on planes to serve passengers ๐Ÿ“approach sb = ask sb for help or information ๐Ÿ“air hostess = female cabin crew ๐Ÿ“stubborn = not giving up ๐Ÿ“attempt = try

#17 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ The Zhous are a ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณChinese family living in Sรฃo Paulo, ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ทBrazil. They have recently arrived and hold good jobs at a Chinese company. Their 4-year-old son goes to a nearby kindergarten with mostly local children as it is close to their home. After a month of classes, the Chinese mother finally talks to her sonโ€™s teacher.
