#1 Documentary: Korean pop music is conquering the world

🆕 In this series you can watch short documentaries that give you a better understanding of issues that shape our world today. Pick up academic vocabulary and authentic speech on the way!

▶️ Today’s documentary is about the global success story of K-Pop – pop music from South Korea. You may love or hate K-Pop, but there is more to this (=there is more to understand about this). Its success formula (=recipe or way to be successful) is all about being loud, eye-catching (=big and colourful so that people easily notice it), confident, perfectly styled and tech-savvy (=being good at using technology). But the global popularity of K-Pop also proves something more. English is no longer the only language that can reach global audiences and America is no longer the cultural hegemon (=dominant power) it used to be.

#14 Afandi Quiz: What’s the word?

Today’s quiz is about something resembling a human shark attack.

▶️What would you say when you sit at a crappy (=of low quality) now-even-sandy beach and someone came to scare you with a shark costume? Pathetic (=stupid in a weak and annoying way), right?

Afandi English
The photo shows someone ... as shark.
Oops!

👎 Pretending is wrong for two reasons. It’s the wrong meaning and the wrong usage. Wrong meaning – pretending is not just standing there looking like a shark but it would mean acting like a shark as well. The photo doesn’t show that. Wrong usage – the sentence contains as, and that doesn’t work with pretend. You can pretend as if you were a shark but not as a shark.

👎 Costume is not usually a verb or adjective, even though there is indeed a shark costume in the picture.

👍 Disguised is the right answer. The verb disguise means to change your appearance so that others don’t recognise you. Okay, the shark costume is a crappy disguise, but still!

👎 False is literally false.
#16 Learn how to learn: Study groups

Studying by yourself may not be your thing. And you may also feel that your English classes are not enough. What to do?

❗️ Find some friends and set up a study group. It’s a great way to help and motivate each other and create the right kind of environment. Find people who are crazy like you and use the power of friendship for your learning aims!

1️⃣ Make sure you share the same purpose. Maybe you all want to take IELTS or you all study medicine or you all like novels or movies. That way you never run out of topics to discuss.

2️⃣ Find a good place and time to meet and have regular activities. Maybe in a café? Or a quiet corner in the library, or someone’s home, or just some empty classroom? Before or after classes? Or even just online?

3️⃣ Make some rules. Agree on a regular time, be punctual, make it a priority, use only English, take turns paying for drinks, bring videos or books to discuss, do extra discussions online, etc.

#50 Our favourite mistakes: Pronunciation

▶️ Try pronouncing the following words:
exam
• examine
• determine
• minute
• pretty
• risen
• Sydney
• Syria
• Turkey
• typical
• wind (shamol)

What sound do these words have in common?

❗️ They contain the short [ɪ] sound, as in “milk” or “think”. For clarity in Cyrillic (not Russian pronunciation):
• exam – wrong: эксам, correct: игзам
• examine – wrong: эксамайн, correct: игзамин
• determine – wrong: дитермайн, correct: дитўрмин
• minute – wrong: минут, correct: минит
• pretty – wrong: претти, correct: притти
• risen – wrong: райзн, correct: ризн
• Sydney – wrong: Сидней, correct: Сидни
• Syria – wrong: Сурия, correct: Сирия
• Turkey – wrong: Тўркей, correct: Тўрки
• typical – wrong: тайпикл, correct: типикл
• wind (shamol) – wrong: вайнд, correct: винд

#17 World Englishes: Received Pronunciation

❗️ Received Pronunciation or also just called RP is Standard British English. Other names of it are Oxford English and BBC English. It does not have any grammatical or lexical features and is historically based on the London accent of English but now used by anyone in England. But some people are against it, saying that RP sounds arrogant and not local enough. Nowadays local dialects are more accepted in society, even on the BBC.

🔘 Pronunciation: Most noticeable is probably the missing r pronunciation in words like “car” or “heard”. However, an r may be added between words in vowel linking where there is no written “r”, e.g. “the law ͜ r ͜ of nature”. The clear t sound in “water” and “butter” is thought to be a sign of RP. Generally RP speakers try to speak clearly at all times.

#17 Travelogue Uzbekistan: Geni-Uz

You might argue that the country of uniformly white cars, copycat chocolate (see #13) and “konspekt” (the brainless copying of texts into notebooks) lacks creativity – but you couldn’t be more wrong. Here is some evidence:

1️⃣ Kettle water wheel
You wouldn’t likely spend a significant part of your life with an electric kettle Made in China. But you can make your kettle immortal by putting it on a beautiful water wheel.

2️⃣ Repurposed shipping containers
Not many things can match shipping containers in terms of usefulness. In fact, each one of them is an opportunity to create something of lasting value.

3️⃣ Stairway of tyres
Stairs don’t have an easy existence. They are cold, functionalistic and just mundane. Let’s make stairs more exciting!

---Vocab---
📍kettle = a pot for boiling water 📍immortal = cannot die 📍repurpose sth = use sth with a different purpose 📍undeservedly = unfairly 📍mundane = unexciting
