Movie Time #70: Welcome to the Sticks (2008)

▶️ Today’s film is a 🇫🇷French comedy about a man from sunny Southern France who has to move to the North of France where it always rains, where people eat bad food, speak a strange dialect and are unsophisticated (=simple, not clever). Watch how he slowly accepts his fate and falls in love with the place.

🔤 Subtitles provided.

Talking Point #5: Invasive technology

▶️ How times have changed. For a bit of convenience (=sth is easy and practical) we’re giving up our privacy. Smart assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri and Google’s creatively named “Google” save our time and make for (=create) some funny interactive moments. But they listen to everything that happens in our homes. How do you feel about that?

World Food #20: Biryani Rice from 🇮🇳India and 🇵🇰Pakistan

▶️ Here is India’s answer to plov. Biryani is lighter and has more spices in it. There are three versions of it: Chicken Biryani, Mutton Biryani and Vegetable Biryani.

... made with:
Long-grain rice (basmati), chicken / mutton / vegetables, and then the spices (whichever you can get): Cloves, star anise, bayleaf, ginger, turmeric, chili, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, etc. Use Google picture search to see what they look like.

... eaten with:
Raita – a salty sauce made of yoghurt, cucumber, onion, garlic, herbs and spices.

Healthy or not? 🟢
Easy to make? 🟢
Cheap enough? 🟡
