#17 Afandi Karaoke: Sorry (by Justin Bieber)

▶️ You don’t have to be a fan of Justin Bieber to enjoy this video and practice your English with it. Something captivating (=sth catching you) about the tech (=technology) here!

#51 YouTube Channel Recommendation: JerryRigEverything

📊 English Level: Upper

🔤 Subtitles: Provided

💬 Topics: Technology, driving, experiments, DIY

💡 Content: This channel is slightly (=a little bit) nerdish (=crazy about technology and every detail of it) but a great source of English if you’re interested in technology and building stuff. Jerry loves to take stuff apart and see how things work, and he can make things work like a total DIY (=‘do it yourself’, not buying things but making them by oneself) guy. Very hands-on (=practical and simple, working with one’s hands).

Afandi Quiz #124: What is this thing?

Here's something that looks like some lavash bread or tortilla or chapati but isn't!

👉@afandi_english👈 #thing_quiz
Almost well done, I think we've found the right answer after all!

These are realistic-looking tortilla blankets. They don't just look funny, they're also super soft and very forgiving when it comes to stains (=dirty areas on clothes).
Our favourite mistakes #147: Pronunciation

▶️ Try pronouncing the following words:
confidence
• distance
• development
• government
• helpless
• speechless

What do these words have in common?

❗️ Words ending in -ence/-ance, -ment and -less are pronounced with schwa (ə), just like the last letter in борми.
• kɒnfɪdəns
• dɪstəns
• dɪveləpmənt
• gʌvənmənt
• helpləs
• spi:ʧləs

Movie Time #63: The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)

▶️ Today’s film is a comedy-drama about an 🇮🇳Indian family of chefs that ends up (=get an unplanned result) somewhere in the 🇫🇷French countryside. Watch how good food transcends (=goes beyond, overcomes) cultural differences and leads to a happy multicultural ending.

Travelogue 🇩🇪Germany #11: The cure

▶️ Perhaps you know the Russian word "курорт" which is the German word for "spa town". There are many of them in Germany, and they're usually named "Bad ...". That doesn't mean "bad" in English but "bath".

Some have natural salt deposits (=presence of minerals or elements) in the ground, and inhaling (=breathing in deeply) salty steam (=humid air) can cure (=heal) many ills.

To make the salty water breathable people built these tall structures stuffed (=filled) with tree twigs (=small branches) from which salt water runs down.

Still today it is common to 'go on a cure' for a month or just spend a wellness (=sth good for your body, like massage, sauna, etc) weekend at a spa town. Spa town architecture is also very beautiful.
