#141 Our favourite mistakes: Pronunciation

โ–ถ๏ธ Try pronouncing the following words:
โ€ข hello
โ€ข like
โ€ข look
โ€ข online
โ€ข only

โ“What do these words have in common?

โ—๏ธ They all contain /L/ sounds that Russian-educated Uzbeks often pronounce with a Russian very dark /L/. This is probably for their similarity to Russian words:
โ€ข hello sounds like ะฐะปะปะพ
โ€ข like sounds like ะปะฐะนะบ
โ€ข look sounds like ะปัƒะบ
โ€ข online sounds like ะพะฝะปะฐะนะฝ
โ€ข only sounds close enough to online

It has become the #1 lingua franca (=language used for communication between speakers of different languages) of Nigeria, Africaโ€™s most populous (=having a large population) nation. Pidgin is so big that the BBC broadcasts in it. Read more about this new language.
