#36 Tongue twister: Peter Piper

❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister:

▶️ Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Translation:
Piter Payper bir oram tuzlangan qalampir tanladi. Piter Payper tuzlangan qalampirdan bir oram tanlaganmi? Agar Piter Payper bir oram tuzlangan qalampir tanlagan bo'lsa, Piter Payper tanlagan bir oram tuzlangan qalampir qani?

🔘 Intonation: As a rule of thumb (=approximate rule, not 100% rule), go ↗️ before commas and ↘️ before full stops. Go ↗️ at the end of yes-or-no questions and ↘️ at the end of wh-questions. 👇

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers ↘️. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers ↗️? If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers ↗️, where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked ↘️?

#136 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Prosto seni sevaman demoqchi edim.

Perhaps you think it is:
Just I wanted to say I love you.

Well, it should be:
I just wanted to say I love you.

Why?

❗️ Just I means only I – not somebody else. This is not the intended meaning here.

❗️ Just is a synonym of only and always describes the word behind it. Unlike the Russian просто it cannot be used for a whole phrase.

#108 Afandi Quiz: Mysterious song

Today’s quiz is about a mysterious song from Greater China (=territories with a Chinese majority population).

👉@afandi_english👈 #quiz #song_quiz
Afandi English
This song is from …
Not too bad!

💡The style of the song wouldn’t tell you much but the language should. It’s Cantonese, the native language of Hong Kong, Macau and bordering Guangdong (colonial: “Canton”) Province of the Mainland. Music from Mainland China and Taiwan are usually in Mandarin, which is modern standard Chinese. Meanwhile, Macau is very small and famous for its casinos and, unlike neighbouring Hong Kong, doesn’t have a music industry. Hong Kong’s bands and singers – referred to as “Cantopop” have had a huge influence on Chinese pop music and beyond.

#10 Travel Notes: Sights of Istanbul

▶️ Let’s forget about the touristy parts of the city and do sightseeing of a different kind today:

🔹 The Water
The city’s most spectacular views can be enjoyed from a boat – the silhouette (=dark shadow or shape seen against the light) of the big mosques and the bridge connecting Asia and Europe.

🔹 The Streets
Some of Istanbul’s streets are just nice places to be. That’s not because of one particular thing, it’s a combination.

🔹 Street Art
Graffiti (=writing or painting on walls in public places) and surreal (=unreal, like in a dream) paintings on house walls – this really gives Istanbul a European feel.

🔹 Cats
Erdoğan may be the president of Turkey but Istanbul is ruled by cats actually.

🔹 Living Walls
Along the many big roads you can find walls that are vertical (=up and down) gardens. Never seen that elsewhere!
