#4 Travel Notes: Culinary journey to ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒArmenia

โ–ถ๏ธ New country, new food! Okay, I didnโ€™t try all of these but which one would you like to try? I have three foods and three drinks for you:

1. Khinkali โ€“ dumplings filled with meat or cheese or both or other stuff. You hold them at the knob of dough which you shouldnโ€™t eat.
2. Cheese bags โ€“ made of cheese with a cheese string and a cheese filling.
3. Chicken feet โ€“ I thought only Chinese people were into that.
4. Cones compote โ€“ something different!
5. Tesla โ€“ Armeniaโ€™s favourite energy drink.
6. Fizzy basil drink โ€“ why are Uzbeks doing so little with all their basil?

#42 Movie Time: Bread and Tulips (2000)

โ–ถ๏ธ Todayโ€™s film is an ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡นItalian romance comedy about a dissatisfied housewife going on a trip by herself after being forgotten at a motorway service area. Watch how she finds the beauty and excitement of just being herself in Venice and enjoy the sheer Italian-ness of the film.

๐Ÿ”ค Subtitles provided.

#26 Know Your World: Logical fallacies

โ–ถ๏ธ We all hate them โ€“ people who use stupid and illogical arguments when we quarrel (=fight, have an argument) with them. Get to know what logical fallacies (=false beliefs) there are and catch these people to make the world a more logical place!

#13 World Food: ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ทTurkish Breakfast

โ–ถ๏ธ A good breakfast is the start of a good day. Turkish breakfast is exactly that. It is rich and usually salty and is โ€ฆ

... made with:
Fresh white bread, feta cheese (=a type of white cheese), sucuk (=Turkish sausage with garlic), fried or boiled eggs, sliced fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, and black olives.

... eaten with:
Fresh ingredients sprinkled (=put small amounts of sth on top) with olive oil, salt and dried herbs. People drink black tea with sugar in small glasses.

Healthy or not? ๐ŸŸข
Easy to make? ๐ŸŸข
Cheap enough? ๐ŸŸก

๐Ÿ’ก Content: Follow the news with an ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณIndian spin (=present sth in a particular way) and familiarise yourself with Indian-accented high-level English โ€“ a variety that you are very likely to come face to face with at some point in your life.

#27 Know Your World: Culture classes for immigrants

โ–ถ๏ธ Ever since the refugee (=sb escaping from a bad situation, esp. wars) crisis of 2015 Europe hasnโ€™t been the same. Should refugees understand the locals or locals understand the refugees? Watch this documentary about Muslim immigrants in ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ดNorway.

#97 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ Omar is a low-budget (=spending little money) travel blogger from ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พMalaysia. It is his first trip to Europe. In ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธSpain he visits a so-called โ€œferiaโ€ โ€“ a big festival celebrated in a small town. He is really excited about it but also disturbed by one thing.

๐Ÿ‘‰@afandi_english๐Ÿ‘ˆ #culture_quiz
Afandi English
Whatโ€™s the problem with the Spanish festival?
Hm!

๐Ÿ’ก Our Malaysian traveller is irritated (=annoyed, disturbed) by the fact that all shops are closed, forcing him to eat expensive food in restaurants. Go anywhere in Asia, celebrations are rarely so holy that people donโ€™t go about (=do sth as usual) their business. In most parts of Europe, however, shops also close on Sundays.
#130 Our favourite mistakes: Writing

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following items:
Andijon davlat universiteti
Oksford universiteti nashriyoti
Jahon savdo tashkiloti

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
Andijan state university
Oxford university press
World trade organisation

โœ… Well, it should be:
Andijan State University
Oxford University Press
World Trade Organisation

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ Proper nouns in English are capitalised. If they consist of several words then all of the words are capitalised, not just the first word (unlike in Uzbek).

#5 Travel Notes: Christian Armenia

โ–ถ๏ธ Think what you want about religion but I find it fascinating to observe people at their most spiritual moments. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒArmenia is situated in the mountains. Mountain dwellers (=people who live in the mountains) around the world have always been more likely to preserve (=keep) ancient traditions and not follow current changes around them. Visiting an Armenian church or monastery (=religious building where monks or nuns live) therefore feels a little bit like travelling through time as well. It is quite unlike anything you find in the hustle and bustle (=noise and activity of a crowded place) of Europe or America.
