#112 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Yoki darsga vaqtida kirasiz yoki darsdan keyin o‘n bir yigirmada kelasiz.

Perhaps you think it is:
Or you enter to the class on time or you come after the class at eleven and twenty.

Well, it should be:
Either you come to the class on time or you come after the class at eleven twenty.

Why?

❗️ “Or … or …” is an Uzbek and Russian construction. In English it is “Either … or …”.

❗️ The verb enter is used without the preposition to.

❗️ Entering a class is emphasizing that someone physically enters the classroom but doesn’t mean that someone is a student or participates in the class. Come and go are preferred here.

❗️ When telling the time there is no and between the hour and the minutes, unless you use o’clock.

#9 World Food: Hotpot from 🇨🇳China

▶️ Hotpot is …

... made with:
A spicy soup and plenty of vegetables, meat, noodles, tofu (=cheese-like thing made from beans), dumplings (=meat-filled pastry), mushrooms, etc.

... eaten with:
People dip the stuff from the pot in a sauce that they can mix by themselves. This can be soya sauce (=a salty dark brown sauce made from beans), vinegar, sesame sauce, herbs, garlic, chili and many more.

The interesting part is that the soup boils constantly and people add in whatever they feel like eating. It’s a popular dish for the cold season. Of course this food is eaten with chopsticks (=sticks that East Asians use for eating).

Healthy or not? 🟡
Easy to make? 🟢
Cheap enough? 🟡

#13 Know Your World: Is Japan a dying nation?

▶️ Like other developed countries, Japan is an ageing society (=a society in which there are more and more old people). But unlike western countries the Japanese prefer robots over immigrants. Let’s take a closer look!

What does this map show?
Ayyy!

💡 This map was about fertility rates, i.e. the number of children per woman. The global average is 2.3 children per woman. The rate is lowest in developed countries (0.84 in 🇰🇷South Korea) and highest in developing countries (7.0 in 🇳🇪Niger). In Uzbekistan it stands at 2.7 currently.
#113 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Sizning do’stlaringiz juda ham ko’p, men sizga havas qilaman.

Perhaps you think it is:
You have too many friends, I admire to you.

Well, it should be:
You have so many friends, I admire you.

Why?

❗️ The English too is always negative. When someone has too many friends it means something bad, like they don’t have time for their family or they party too much, etc. Instead of too you can use so or a lot of which is neutral.

❗️ Admire does not need to in English.
